Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman and Oglala Sioux Tribe President Bryan Brewer were scheduled to meet privately in Heineman’s office Monday morning to talk about alcohol sales in Whiteclay, but Brewer left after less than 3-minutes.

There were indications in advance that the meeting might be icy. One came Sunday when self-described California watchdog group issued a release saying Heineman received $96,000 in campaign contributions from the liquor industry…including Anheuser-Busch, distributors and alcohol trade associations.

Alcohol Justice…which describes itself as a nonpartisan, nonprofit that seeks to reveal the influence of campaign money…cited the National Institute on Money in State Politics as its source, and charged that illegal alcohol activity and bootlegging in Whiteclay have not been stopped because of the financial contributions to Heineman and other Nebraska politicians.

Then about an hour before his meeting with Brewer, Heineman told reporters that the president and the tribe need more action in treatment and education of alcohol abuse on the reservation, saying the need to meet the problem head-on and citing that as “one area where I think they can improve.”
