NAACP Chairman Roslyn M. Brock:
Today, justice failed Trayvon Martin and his family, said Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP. We call immediately for the Justice Department to conduct an investigation into the civil rights violations committed against Trayvon Martin. This case has re-energized the movement to end racial profiling in the United States.
NAACP President Benjamin Todd Jealous:
We are outraged and heartbroken over todays verdict, said Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO of the NAACP. We stand with Trayvons family and we are called to act. We will pursue civil rights charges with the Department of Justice, we will continue to fight for the removal of Stand Your Ground laws in every state, and we will not rest until racial profiling in all its forms is outlawed.
NAACP Florida State Conference President Adora Obi Nweze:
We lost a young man due to senseless violence, but justice did not prevail, said Adora Obi Nweze, President of the Florida NAACP State Conference. Last year we pushed for the arrest of George Zimmerman and a thorough investigation and trial. Today, we are still called to act. No one should be allowed to use this law to commit a senseless crime again.

(13,141 posts)I too feel it isn't over though I have no idea what that
means. I do feel sure Zimmerman will be afraid and
unhappy for the rest of his life.
It's too important, the civil rights + the fucking
out of control guns. Not over yet.

It is comforting to be able to connect with other kindred spirits who only wanted justice for Trayvon.

... and the place to start is the Sanford Police Department and their handling of GZ at the very start. They grossly mishandled the situation from the get-go. Had people across this country not protested, there would have not even BEEN a trial. That's the saddest thing of all. The whole thing was a travesty.

*Created a vigilante idol
*Gave "racism" a shot in the arm.
*Struck fear in the hearts and minds of all parents.
*Reduced faith, trust and respect in our judicial system and law itself.
*Brought crowds of people to the streets across the USA in the middle of the night.
I could go on and on until tomorrow afternoon, but I won't.

Alas, 2013. It appears its not safe for young boys especially of color and American citizens to have Freedom to walk the streets.

There, I've said it. All the bad stuff I'm thinking about Zimmerman. He's a THUG, a loser, a zero trying to make himself a 'big man'. He makes me sick.

(13,141 posts)I do believe in karma as a natural law.
I'm trying not to give a lot of fuel to
my thoughts and wishes but believe me
you are not alone.
It won't surprise me if his life is very
short. But even if it is long, it's not going
to be a happy one.
At some point, even if it's at the moment
of death, he will have to face himself, and
see and FEEL the weight of his actions.
That's what I believe.

(11,065 posts)He already made that clear when he said on national tv that he had no regrets, no remorse, would do it again and it was all just God's plan.
And if he's not going to feel safe for the rest of his life he WILL do it again.
Voice for Peace
(13,141 posts)Some people learn to pay attention to it,
and it becomes their guide.
It is the communication link between our heart
and our brain.
It informs us, via feeling, about right and
wrong. Very young children can grasp it.
Some people learn/ are taught to ignore it.
ie, to ignore the information coming to
us from our own feeling self. They
trust the experts and authorities more
than their own feeling selves. If they
wound someone, they have learned
not to feel it.
But a healthy creature can feel the pain
they inflict on another creature.
"Unbidden shall it call in the night"
One way or another, one day, GZ will have
to face his crimes, and feel the sorrow
fear and pain he has caused. He will have
to feel all of it, and he will have to face
his lies as well. He will have to face himself.
All of us do. I absolutely believe this is a law
of Nature.
by that very law which you would fain serve?
Yet you cannot lay remorse upon the innocent
nor lift it from the heart of the guilty.
Unbidden shall it call in the night, that men may
wake and gaze upon themselves.

(2,424 posts)Please do not look at my white face with contempt.
My heart bleeds for not just the Martin child, but an entire history of injustice.
I thought we had crossed a reasonable threshold with this kind of crap in the 1960's. At least with respect to the law.
ALEC has set us (and I mean all of us) back about 40 years with this terrible law.
You absolutely should not be in a position where you must "educate" your child about mere survival.
I am appalled that this can take place in the year 2013.
I am sincerely sorry.

(39,909 posts)and support the prosecution of Zimmerman at the federal level as a violation of Treyvon's Civil Right to Walk while Black.
And it should also be pursued as a Racially Based Hate Crime.
Zimmerman:
*went hunting in his vehicle
*spotted his quarry
*stalked this Young Unarmed Black Youth from his vehicle
*grabbed his gun
*exited his vehicle against Police Orders
*continued stalking his victim on foot
*deliberately planned and set a confrontation trap by hiding in wait along his victims path
*shot and killed his chosen victim, an unarmed Black Youth,
...and its NOT his fault?
