(16,038 posts)Actual "civil rights" and liberties are enumerated in the constitution and bill of rights..these may only be violated by the government..period..
More 'johnny come lately' references to "civil rights" are actually acts of congress or federal laws..for instance if an landlord refuses to rent to black renters, he has not violated the renters constitutional rights, they have violated an act of congress or law..

(52,253 posts)zimmerman's claim, and a not guilty verdict at a criminal trial, don't prove immunity from civil suit here, from my read.

(52,253 posts)the family would have to sue, and either the judge or a jury (not sure in which in fl) would have to determine that it was in fact a matter of self-defense.
the criminal trial didn't really answer that question because all they did was find zimmerman not proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt without specifying how the conclusion was reached.
i would think the different standard of proof matters. the couldn't prove it wasn't self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt, but the preponderance of evidence suggests that it wasn't self-defense. so they could prevail in a civil trial.
not that zimmerman has deep pockets with which to pay out, but still.

Now that he's "innocent", he might be able to cash in from lawsuits, in addition to the book and movie money.
