(53,661 posts)They Live - The Sellout - John Carpenter
My favorite clip. The 'sell out' represents every GOP politician. They are like what the DUer wrote:
Republicans serve The Beast.
From the dawn of mankind they are the regressive element that's been holding back and destroying our civilization. They nourish other-dimensional entities that feed on misery, pain, and chaos.
Republicans are their minions, and hope to share in these entities' power, or be spared the pain.
But The Beast never shares; The Beast never spares.
Which is in tune with the recent Bill Maher quote posted here:
In The Great Divide Between Democrats and Republicans, Some Words From Bill Maher To Remember...
Democrats in America were put on Earth to do one thing... drag the ignorant, hillbilly half of this country into the next century, which in their case, is the 19th.
~ Bill Maher

(37,648 posts)People keep saying that...but where are the defenders? There are those who understand the jury verdict, whether they agree or disagree.
I respect the jury's verdict in this case. They seem to have gone through the evidence. They had a very narrow set of questions to decide....not all the stuff being discussed in blogs & on tv. They found that, legally, the state did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that GZ was not defending himself. I and others may have arrived at a different verdict, but I can't say that the evidence doesn't support their verdict.
The prosecutor can appeal, can't he?
A civil trial has an easier wall to hurdle. It's the level of "probable," more likely than not....not the "beyond a reasonable doubt."
It's all legal stuff. Not moral or ethical stuff.

(37,648 posts)great bodily harm? Answer:_____.
That's pretty much what the jury was deciding, for manslaughter.
Fact: TM struck the first blow. (prosecutor conceded this...the evidence shows this)
Fact: TM was on top and had GZ down & hitting him (prosecutor conceded this...most of the evidence shows this)
All this other stuff about GZ getting out of the car, lying, not knowing the street names....that really doesn't matter in the end. For a manslaughter charge, anyway. Not legally.
The jury did not find that GZ was innocent. It was the state's burden to prove that GZ was NOT in fear of great bodily harm. Hard to prove that beyond a reasonable doubt. I can see how the jury decided that.
I don't know that that would've been my vote, but I can see how they decided that.
It's a rough row to hoe, when you're the one who strikes the first blow. Once you hit someone, they can claim they had to do this or that in self defense. In my mind, it has to be a REASONABLE response, though. I'm not sure a gunshot thru the heart is reasonable. Why not a warning shot in the air? But I wasn't in the jury room.

Here's a thought - stay in the fucking truck and let the police (whom were called) handle it.
RC
(25,592 posts)George Zimmerman WAS told to stay in the truck. He did not. He took the law into his own hands and ending up killing an innocent boy, walking in the rain, with his hood up. Since when is that a capital offense?

(16,199 posts)I still think the hunting him down was enough to prove murder 2.

Zimmerman was OUT of his truck when the 911 dispatcher said "We don't need you to do that". Please tell me how that equates to "George Zimmerman WAS told to stay in the truck".

There is a less than 1/4" abrasion on Trayvon's left ring finger, and the magic rain that washed all the blood off of him and completely missed the killer who was standing around talking to police.
I would really like to see that "evidence".

But GD and LBN be getting nasty, and that jury system in DU sucks - as does the one in Florida obviously.
So I mostly hang out in the Lounge, dip into groups like rural/frugal living, environment and energy and the likes.
I dodge (literally) in and out of GD now and then.
I do peek around politics and LBN - there is a wealth of information on DU - I doubt I'd ever quit.
DU is my favorite forum -
Lotsa good people in here, but trying to wean myself off (successfully) of engaging in full blown arguments.
Now - I'm here for the wealth of information, as well as relaxing (mostly) entertainment in the Lounge.

(838 posts)Are you content to surround yourself only with people who will rec your comments (+1+1+1+1), and preach to the choir? I see a lot of this here when I check in. Everyone clapping each other on the back at how enlightened they are about this story or that, and how dumb-ass the right wing is. FYI, discussions on freep and fox look exactly the same; just reversed wings.
Different wings, same friggin' bird...

(4,766 posts)Racism and bigotry are morally wrong. If "they" believe in hell, may they rot in it.
Decoy of Fenris
(1,954 posts)If the general consensus via society is that something is moral and acceptable, then society itself passes a moral judgement that potentially "antisocial" behaviors and beliefs are by definition socially acceptable. Morality, by and large, is instilled through societal conditioning, and is arbitrary. Remember, there are people who believe that homosexuality and abortion are morally wrong; Society says otherwise, thus rendering their beliefs immoral.
Morality is certainly not concrete.
LAGC
(5,330 posts)Too many on our side see moral relativism whereas they see moral absolutes.
Sometimes a sense of fairness and equality trump whatever prevailing winds of morality happen to be endorsed by a given society though.
(At least until society as a whole comes around to agree.)
Decoy of Fenris
(1,954 posts)I think that as a whole, we are witnessing a phenomenon precipitating a cultural backslide, so to speak, wherein "civilized" culture is reverting back to an "uncivilized" base of "I got mine so fuck off." This is evident not only in the Zimmerman case, but also in the enhancement of the corporate state and the general state of mind of the average civilian, regardless of location. In Pre- and Post-World War II society, there was a significant establishment of the "Us" mentality, briefly witnessed in a resurgence during the Post-9/11 American world, but since discarded. Like as not, one of the root causes of this social phenomenon would be a worldwide economic downturn and lack of a clear and common "Enemy" against which to unite as a whole.
Unfortunately, it is my belief that the only way that we'll drag ourselves out of this state is if, for some reason, the entire world becomes threatened. Otherwise, barring a major war, I do not think that this generation or the upcoming ones will establish a clear sense of united humanity and will continue to slide backwards.
