Melissa began by saying how terrible it was that she was relieved when one of her children was a girl because she would not encounter what a son (her other sons) would, though she would have her own unique issues. Each one then mentioned their own fears for their children, with such sorrow. I feel so sad, even as I have to face the fact that my own two wonderful young men, no matter what they encounter, will never experience being profiled and discriminated against simply because they are not white.
The entire show has been heartbreaking.

(1,799 posts)This hit all of us hard, but no one more I think than African American mothers. The court, the whole system just devalues the lives of young black men. It's not right.

(37,152 posts)beautiful little black boy who turned three today, sat beside two playful young black brothers who looked like twins and managed to get all wet playing outside the restaurant, and watched a group of animated white twenty-somethings with one black guy in their group, and I just kept tearing up thinking how all of these boys and their families have to think and move in this fucked up country.
Then, on our way back to the car, we were stopped by a homeless black vet who asked for money to eat. We gave him some money and talked with him a while. He told us Reagan was his favorite president, but then said he's a Dem after I went on about Republicans cutting vet services. Who knows what was the truth - he needed money and was trying to figure out what angle to play with us.
What a country!
