What George Zimmerman Can Do Now
By Charles P. Pierce at 7:45am
Calm is prevailing. For now. At least, that's something.
However, in theory, at least, here is what is now possible. Some night very soon, if he so chooses, George Zimmerman can load his piece, tuck it into the back of his pants, climb into his SUV, and drive around Sanford, Florida looking for assholes and fucking punks who are walking through neighborhoods where he, George Zimmerman, defender of law and order, doesn't think they belong. He can drive around Sanford, Florida and check out anyone who is dressed in such a manner as might frighten the average citizen who has been fed a daily diet of "Scary Black Kids" by their local news and by their favorite radio personalities, and who is dressed in such a manner as might seem inappropriate to their surroundings as determined by George Zimmerman, crimebuster. He can drive around Sanford, Florida until he spots an asshole or a fucking punk and then he can get out of his SUV, his piece tucked into the back of his pants, and he can stalk the asshole or the fucking punk, the one who is in the wrong neighborhood, or who is dressed inappropriately, at least according to George Zimmerman, protector of peace. If the asshole, or the fucking punk, turns around and objects to being stalked -- or, worse, if the asshole, or the fucking punk, decides physically to confront the person stalking him -- then George Zimmerman can whip out the piece from the back of his pants and shoot the asshole, or the fucking punk, dead right there on the spot. This can happen tonight. That is now possible. Hunting licenses are now available and it's open season on assholes, fucking punks, and kids who wear hoodies at night in neighborhoods where they do not belong, at least according to George Zimmerman, defender of law and order, crimebuster, and protector of the peace, because that is what American society has told George Zimmerman, and all the rest of us, is the just outcome of what happened on one dark and rainy night in February of 2012.

(1,918 posts)If I saw him on the street, acting suspicious as if he wanted to start some mess, I would honestly be in fear of my life. I wish I wish I was sarcastic in that statement, but it honestly scares the hell out of me that he would be out on the street and apparently does not feel that he did anything wrong. Thus, he could possibly put himself in that position again. On the flip side, I would hope no neighborhood watch would allow him to take part in the efforts. He would be a serious liability.

That may be the only justice we get from this travesty.

(90,714 posts)At this point I never want to be on a jury in a criminal trial.
that was part of the problem. Not much point in having a jury if they can't see all the evidence.

(166 posts)Unless you think it would have been OK to allow evidence of Trayon's past misdeeds. I suspect you would object there. If you have a problem take it up with the judge.
I think the jury came to the right decision, ultimately. The state failed to prove its case, and the jury has to work with what evidence is presented to them at trial.

(19,326 posts)but the scary undeniable fact is, there are 10s of thousands "George Zimmermans"
out there, gleefully savoring their newfound freedoms to murder-at-will.

(2,730 posts)It has become easier to commit murder and get off in Florida. Zimmerman is not the only person can pack a gun. Gun violence will probably increase in Florida also. Somebody could kill him packing a gun and claim self defense. All they have to do is claim he pulled his gun on them, and they felt their life was in danger. How will the prosecution prove it didn't happen that way, if Zimmerman can't testify? Those women don't know what they hatched. They can be attacked and fight back, but the attacker can just shoot you defending himself. All he has to do is say his life was in danger. If they ever threw things at their husbands and injure them, all he has to do is take out his gun and shoot you.

(7,530 posts)I don't think I disagree with the concept of "Stand Your Ground"...but I think standing "your" ground should be limited to "ground" you actually own. You can stand your ground in your house and on your property, but someone shouldn't be allowed go canvassing for people to shoot.
Didn't it used to be called "the Castle Defense"?
Jackpine Radical
(45,274 posts)to establish that his killing was in self-defense. The legal default position was a homicide charge.
If, for example, the burglar had bullet holes in the back, things might not go well for you. I also seem to recall a WI case in which the defendant had fired three rounds into his home-invading would-be assailant. The first 2 were ruled Self Defense but the third, and fatal round was found to be an act of homicide because it was not necessary in defending against the already disabled assailant.
Mr.Bill
(24,303 posts)was not used as a defense in this case. They argued simple self-defense.

(166 posts)The prosecution failed to prove their case, pure and simple. Murder 2 was absurd on its face, manslaughter more plausible, but the evidence was not there. Perhaps a lesser change to start with and throughout the trial, but this case became political so quickly, and so many people wanted this to become a show trial with a predetermined guilty verdict.
Yes, Zimmerman will have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life now, and if anything does happen to him I'm afraid many (not all, not even most, but many) on the left will dance with glee. And that is a sad indictment on them.
olegramps
(8,200 posts)He was followed and confronted by someone he could not have possibly have known what his intentions were and had just as much right, even more so to protect himself, unless of course he is Black. The latter is the key. Zimmerman had no right to interfere with his rights as a law abiding citizen. The fact is he Zimmerman was challenged and when he was getting the worse of if the lily white chicken shit pulled out his gun and killed the kid. Unfortunately, this wasn't his first time of his brush with the law which was disallowed from being presented to the jury. I knew he was sunk when one of the jurors said what was the kid doing out so late. The objections of defense to sit this juror were ignored. I know that five of the jurors were White and one maybe a minority, possibly a Latino, and I am to accept that this was a jury of his peers. As a member of the defense remarked in an interview, he was very pleased with the jury selection.

Even the most avid gun-worshippers can't argue that TWO run-ins with the law indicating anger issues should not disqualify you from carrying a gun.

Shame on the Sanford P.D.
Zimmerman is what he is. It's part of his character. I don't expect him to change.
This is going to come to a very bad end. Sooner. Or later.

(20,234 posts)I am expecting an OJ type sequel to this. I think they are both sociopaths who have more in common with Dexter than with the rest of society. He gets a rush out of violence and confrontation, I think it's an addiction for him, and he'll find himself facing new felony charges soon enough.

(9,289 posts)Did Zimmerman come up behind Martin as the article implies? The author somehow knows that he did. Did Martin seem suspicious to Zimmerman simply because he was wearing a hoodie and was a young black male? The author somehow knows that this was indeed the case. At least this author concedes that just maybe Martin decided to "physically confront" Zimmerman. I guess that means that Martin might have decided to beat up Zimmerman. The official narrative might be improving!!
