Authorities release name of 19-year-old shot dead outside New Brunswick home

NEW BRUNSWICK – Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old city man last night.

Eduardo Mendez was shot and killed on Talmadge Street around 8 p.m. Saturday, acting Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said in a news release this afternoon.

Mendez was pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital less than an hour later, Carey's office said. Police found his body outside of a home on the 200 block of Talmadge.

Investigators could be seen combing through the grass of a lawn Saturday night, and were taking photographs of a bike that lay on its side next to the sidewalk. A next door neighbor said that the area, between Remsen Avenue and Livingston Avenue, is typically a quiet one.

Media varies in how they cover the police beat.

NJ outlets report murders frequently. NYC doesn't unless they are sensational, e.g. mutiple bodies, police gun battles, particularly vicious attacks.
