In a Sunday afternoon press conference, members of Trayvon Martins church in Florida called for peace, understanding, healing and, most importantly, remembrance in the wake of the not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman.
Video of the press conference shot by The Sun Sentinel featured Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Arthur Jackson III saying the community was very disappointed by the innocent verdict, but that hes pleased there was no violence as a result.
I believe that this situation has not paralyzed us, has not traumatized us, but is mobilizing us, Jackson said. Its going to be a call to rally at the polls to vote. If weve never voted before, were definitely going to rally to change these unjust laws.
For us in this generation, this is our Medgar Evers moment, he went on, comparing Trayvons killing to the assassination of Evers, the World War II hero and civil rights leader.
This is the moment that were not going to forget. Were going to keep this in the forefront of our minds. This is going to continue to live. It will be something that we talk to our children about, now and forever.
