Do you really think they are the Grand Old Party? Why call them that?
Do you think they would use a complimentary nickname for the Democratic Party?
Would the media?
Why do you do it?

(31,182 posts)That party campaigned around the "hate the Confederates" message for the rest of the 19th century. They called it: "waving the bloody shirt" when the GOPs kept bringing up the war. Presidents Garfield, Grant and McKinley were Civil War veterans.

(31,182 posts)I wanted to see the railroad museum that day and ran out of time.
I grew up in McKinley's home town. Everything was named McKinley. That GAR/GOP dogma was heavily featured in our schools. We sang John Brown's body in music class in grade school.

(27,247 posts)to mark an anniversary of the Battle of Pea Ridge (which the Union won, or should I say, the Confederates lost). It wasn't until a few years later that I realized why many of the locals who showed up for the parade gave us menacing glances.

(3,169 posts)Even the news anchors use the term "GOP." You almost never hear them say "Republican." Maybe they're trying to forget! Oh, and they DO have a nickname for us: we're the Democrat Party, remember?

(6,256 posts)I am familiar with the history. I just can't understand why anyone on DU would continue to use that name.

(58,179 posts)And what of the nickname "Grand Old Party"?
The nickname of the Republican Party didn't get attached to it until 1888. Previously, the nickname had been used by Southern Democrats. After the Republicans won back the Presidency and Congress for the first time since the Grant administration, the Chicago Tribune proclaimed: "Let us be thankful that under the rule of the Grand Old Party ... these United States will resume the onward and upward march which the election of Grover Cleveland in 1884 partially arrested."

(20,450 posts)the "DemoCRAT Party" rather than the correct "DemocraTIC Party". When they do it, we never call them out on it. To his credit, Tweety is the only one who puts his foot down!
It drives me crazy how cowardly Democrats are! Always have to be nice to these Rethugs!!
