it's college students vs. the corporate machine, and the machine is winning

http://www.nationofchange.org/it-s-college-students-vs-corporate-machine-and-machine-s-winning-1373889940

Once this nation saw higher education as a citadel of learning, growth, and opportunity. Now student debt is being used as a cash cow to subsidize corporate tax breaks, while universities become incubators for corporate employees and cheap laboratories for private-sector patents.

The new student loan deal being cooked up in Washington is part of a larger picture. The forces of technology, globalization and wealth are calling the shots in government nowadays, and they’ve got higher education in their sights. Corporations want colleges and universities to serve them, not students.

In the dystopian future unfolding before our eyes, whole segments of the population are being offered up to the Corporate Machine. And unless we reject the corporate commodification of our common humanity, there’s no end in sight.

We can start by doing something about student loans. But that’s only a start.

1. Student loans are insane. I know people still paying 20 years later.

There's really no better investment we can make in the country than guaranteeing an education to all who want it.

It's been turned into another way to bleed people instead.

Our priorities suck.

7. And that has been true since the first loans/grants were given out. Either we invest in the future

I recall getting some kind of federal loan that was interest-free provided you paid it back on time. No one was making a killing, and it didn't present a hardship. My impression is that there's a lot more predatory lending going on now, exacerbated by some of the questionable "schools" giving out diplomas to the unwary.

3. I would be more than happy to repay my student loans in full

Generally, the loans themselves aren't the problem. The problem is the interest coupled with the brutal and arbitrary fees. And of course you can't escape these loans unless you're lucky enough to die or become totally and permanently disabled, and even then they might still come after you for them.

I borrowed about $20K by the time I graduated in '99. I deferred for a total of three years and, unfortunately, went into default after I lost my job and house in 2008.

As of today, after 11 years of repayment spanning 14 years, I owe $26K.

It's one hell of a racket, that's for damn sure.

5. Thanks. On the plus side, my loans are comparatively small.

I know lots of people looking at $50K or $75K for degrees that are largely unemployable in today's market. At least my debt is more or less manageable.

Of course, this will all be moot when my lottery scheme reaches fruition...

It's one of the main reasons why we need to get rid of the republican controlled house in 2014.

They spend all their time trying to repeal Obamacare. We need to point out what they should be working on instead.

Education should be very high on the list.

They built a Grand Canyon-sized moat; you can cross, but it's going to take a hell of a lot of time, money and luck to do so.

Any more, "success" is starting to become life's great lie . . . and we have no one to blame but our corporate aristocracy and the political dynasties that exacerbate their wealth. Wait, isn't that the exact thing we tried to get away from when we created this country?

14. We still have 18 years to pay on one daughter's student loans
Mon Jul 15, 2013, 11:47 AM

My husband and I are in our late 50s-early 60s.
Our daughter never graduated, and only recently found part time work as a waitress.
I don't know what's going to happen, but it's a mess.
