Why should a bunch of white people like me give a shit about some black teenager that was killed walking home from the store? Seriously. It's not like he was one of 'us'. Right? Hoodies are a guarantee that a black kid is up to no good. I'm wearing one now, but I'm a middle-aged white woman so it's obvious I'm wearing it as a fashion statement. I also hate Skittles so I assume only no good black kids eat Skittles. When I talk on my cell phone, I make sure that I wave it around so everyone can see it's a cell phone and not a weapon. We all know that black kids talk into their weapons. I've seen it all the time.

Your manager should be fired for encouraging a hostile and bigoted work environment.

Unfortunately all the time I'm reminded of my own status privilege. Badly though some of the rednecks around here treat me at times, I can still get away with a lot more than if I had a better tan. I even talk back to certain cops I don't like and they can't do a blessed thing about it, and I know they know it. Not that I take advantage, but I've made it clear what I'll do if they try anything illegal. I even told the local chief of police (he has one deputy, a good one) that unless the law absolutely required him to come in my yard, he's not welcome and he'd better call ahead to arrange a phone appointment if he wants to talk to me about anything. I've even gone to town council meetings to raise polite hell about certain things, and that's clearly just the first step. They don't like me too much, but they've learned not to overstep either. Could my best friend from L.A. come out here and behave like that? Not if she wanted to stay free, she couldn't.

White people have the right to defend themselves but blacks don't. Krugman was right - liberals and conservatives inhabit different moral universes. And I'm glad, because the conservative one would do just fine as a substitute if there's no real hell. You may not believe this, because child psychologists will say it doesn't happen anywhere near so early, but I received an epiphany sometime before the age of 5. I looked around me at what I now realize were conservatives and vowed to myself, "I'm not going to be like those people." As little as I understood then of the gory details, I could tell something was seriously wrong with them. You know the stench rises to high heaven when even a little child is overcome by the fumes.

I am not getting into a figt with him, but I have a different opinion of him now. And not a good one.
