White Wis. man, 76, charged with killing black 13-year-old over suspicion of theft faces trial

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jury selection began Monday in the case of a 76-year-old white man charged with gunning down a 13-year-old black boy last year on a Milwaukee sidewalk over a theft allegation.

The proceedings come two days after a jury acquitted neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Fla., last year. In the Milwaukee shooting, which has been compared to the Florida case, John Henry Spooner is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the May 2012 death of his next-door neighbor, Darius Simmons.

Spooner suspected Simmons of breaking into his Milwaukee home and stealing guns, prosecutors said. Spooner confronted the teen on the sidewalk two days after the weapons came up missing and demanded that he return them. When Simmons denied stealing anything, Spooner shot him in the chest from five feet away as the teen's mother watched, according to the criminal complaint.

Spooner then fired a second shot as Simmons tried to run away, the complaint said. Police recovered a weapon and two spent bullet casings.

There's no way Spooner was in danger of his life. He may have been angry, but if we had the right to kill anyone we were angry with, the population of the U.S. would be about 1/10 of what it is now.

In Texas if the kid had his property and was running away, he could have shot him.

"The Sun is a mass of plasma and with a mass vastly more than the Earth. It's a slightly smaller than average star about 4.8 billion years old.

"My PhD advisor and his sorry ass are retired now, but his ass is nowhere near 4.8 billion years old. Unlike the Sun, his arse is not composed of plasma, although it is smaller than the average ass and and insane number of times smaller than the Earth's mass."

Now: "The Sun, which has been compared to a professor's ass, is responsible for the vast majority of energy that radiates as infrared from the Earth."

Yes, the two cases have been compared. No, there is no comparison except in pointless superficialities.

Yes, the two cases have been compared. Yes, there are meaningful comparisons in that a white guy killed a black kid whom he suspected of doing something wrong.

It remains to be shown that this is a pointless superficiality, but it's not something that's going to mean that the trials or outcomes are going to be in any way similar, nor would be even if both were in Florida in 2013. (Perhaps Mississippi, 1940. No opinion there.)
