We came home this morning to find the ceiling in our second bedroom collapse during the night.

My wife and I have been sleeping at her mother's house to sleep since the roof in our "master" bedroom leaked from that tornado. We have a terrible smell of Mold and mildew in that room which the landlord was going to come see today. IF the mattress and box spring had been here and my wife had been sleeping there the ceiling would have hurt her.

I need to vent my wife is close to a nervous breakdown.

You two have been through enough already! Is this the same place that had the broken window? I hope you find a new place soon.

Most states have pretty clear renter rights...and your landlord may have broken the lease, by not repairing things.

I once came home to find my living room ceiling on the floor and my cats looking at me like "uh..we didn't do it!"

Luckily, after an initial rocky start, insurance came through and did the right thing and took care of it.

Anyway..I do UNDERSTAND about how traumatic an event it is. All I could think of was what if my cats had been hurt..or I had been on the couch when the ceiling fell?

It sucks..its scary..and even after everything is fixed you may still feel nervous coming home ...especially after a rain. However, it will get better. In the meantime..vent away. It helps.

*HUGS*

I understand how you feel. The place my husband and I are in now has issues regarding a leaking roof. The landlords are from Crete and Tunisia, respectively, and have no idea the damage water can do. We've showed them the rotting roof beams and where the water has come through the ceiling and they do nothing. Or worse, they do something and fuck it up. We complained about the leak over the washer for so long that they finally hired 2 day laborers to come over and put some membrane on and a few shingles. They only intended to do the back half of the house, even though the whole thing needs to be re-roofed. Only the day laborers got it wrong and fixed the wrong half. They thought the back door was the front door and fixed the front half of the house and not the back. When we realized what they had done, as they were cleaning up to leave, we showed them the leaking area. The one who spoke some English was very upset. He apologized but didn't have much left with which to patch the area. He put up some membrane, which leaked the next rain storm. The landlady asked me to let her know if the roof were leaking. I told her yes and she went off on me. We had decided to try and tough it out there one more year - it's cheap - but she withdrew her lease renewal and so we have had to find another place. We signed a lease for a slightly larger place with a working refrigerator and a dish washer. We are happy to be moving and leaving the leaks behind. Last couple of storms it's leaked in our bedroom as well and we are afraid of the ceiling coming down too.
