Lucy-with-the-football Reid: Nuclear option may be averted

Arrgh.

Republicans and Democrats reached for compromise Tuesday over stalled Obama administration nominees, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed confidence a deal was in sight.

Officials said the two sides were discussing a plan that would permit prompt confirmation for most of the contested nominees, including Tom Perez to head the Labor Department. Gina McCarthy to run the Environmental Protection Agency and Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

At the same time, President Barack Obama would drop efforts to win confirmation for two members of the National Labor Relations Board and name two replacements who would receive speedy consideration. Richard Griffin and Sharon Block were originally named to their posts as recess appointees, meaning they bypassed confirmation. An appeals court has since ruled their appointments were invalid, and the Supreme Court has agreed to review the case.

The agreement would not resolve deep partisan divisions over the future use of filibusters to block a president’s executive nominees, said officials on both sides. The officials who described the talks did so only on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to disclose details.

I have never made any bones about the fact that I detest him as Senate Majority Leader. That doesn't make me any less a Democrat - it makes me a Democrat that has common sense and a dedication to our party platform - both of which Reid has failed spectacularly at doing.

If your opinion is that I have to kiss Reid's ass to be a Democrat, then I suggest you find another party, because he lacks backbone - I don't.

21. It was Nate Silver what killed the nuclear option
Tue Jul 16, 2013, 12:09 PM
Jul 2013

The reason I've been arguing against the nuclear option for over ten years now is this simple: if you use it on an opponent as evil as the Republican Party, you can bet your sweet ass they will use it against you, first chance they get, more broadly and malevolently than you yourself can even imagine, with far more destructive results than if you had never used it in the first place.

You won't see Democrats actually use that option until they are absolutely certain they can maintain control of the Senate not just one election in advance, but FOREVER. Your opponent can never, ever again have a chance to gain control of the Senate or you're fucked and, as we all know personally by now, so is your country.

Last week, things were looking really good for the Dems. If they can bag this next election at the same 2 to 1 ratio that they won the Senate last year, Dems get their filibuster-proof supermajority and Republicans lose any realistic chance of ever regaining the Senate (demographically, their racism, chauvinism, homophobia and hatred of immigrants has only two or three viable elections left before Republican policies complete killing off those people; they might erode a supermajority temporarily but by then the nuclear option is a viable tool because Republicans will never regain actual control).

With that possibility on the horizon, the potential use of the nuclear option was real, and was a potentially useful tool in forcing a compromise.

But then this week Nate Silver read his tea leaves and decided that currently, Republicans actually have a chance--their last-ever chance, if you ask me--to regain temporary control of the Senate.

http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/07/15/senate-control-in-2014-increasingly-looks-like-a-tossup/?smid=tw-fivethirtyeight&seid=auto

If that were to happen AND we had just handed over the nuclear keys to Republicans, that would be it for Democrats and President Obama. Nothing would get done (and I know those of you who have no idea how Congress works think nothing is getting done right now, but seriously, you ain't seen nothing yet).

So, Harry Reid had to back off, not because Lucy keeps pulling the football away, but because Harry Reid has a knife and he's planning to hang Lucy from the kite-eating tree and gut her like a fucking deer. He only awaits the proper opportunity to do so, and this week ain't it.

that will do anything to preserve his seat as head of the Senate, which is why he shouldn't hold it. This idea of selling out your party platform to maintain control, then do fuck all when you get control needs to be addressed at the polls. Reid, however, should be forced to step down as Senate leader and let a Democrat with a backbone take over.
