Officer Donohue statement regarding Rolling Stone cover
MBTA Transit Police Officer Richard "Dic" Donohue and his family have received several requests from the media relative to his thoughts and feelings regarding the upcoming cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Below is a statement from Officer Donohue.
"The City of Boston and the surrounding communities have faced many challenges since the bombings at the marathon finish line. The new cover of Rolling Stone has garnered much attention due to its sensationalized depiction of one of the alleged bombers. My family and I were personally affected by these individuals actions. I cannot and do not condone the cover of the magazine, which is thoughtless at best. However, I appreciate our countrys protection of free speech afforded to us by the Constitution. I am confident that our Boston Strong community will remain intrepid and unshaken by the cover of this magazine."

(9,766 posts)There is a long and valid argument about media coverage in these types of situations...that the 24x7 attention ensures these types go out in a blaze of glory.
Putting him on the cover of Rolling Stone in a Jim Morrisonesque pose takes this to a whole new level.
Wonder what his victims think.

Just another stupid outrage with the stupid American Morans.

(9,766 posts)No wonder we can't have any reasonable debate in this country. We can't even have it here.
I'll consider myself shut down. Thanks ever. Later.

(41,991 posts)Btw I think it was surprisingly tone deaf of them to put his photo on the cover, precisely because he is young and pretty, and the RS cover is traditionally a place of honor for entertainers, Manson notwithstanding. I think there's a cultural rift between who they are (for the most part a music mag with some outstanding journalism) and what they think they are (a primarily journalism mag with a strong music component). That photo does indeed look like the seductive promotion of a product.

(32,057 posts)But I see this whole controversy as a result of people shutting down their brains. I hears a bit of the Mike Huckabee show, and he basically said "who cares" about the ARTICLE about the bomber and compared the cover to "reading Playboy for the articles".

(9,748 posts)This is just too fucking stupid. Murderers are pictured all the time. Some of them quite nice, laughing with family and the like. And often captioned, "he seemed like such a good man," or, "what turned this man who loved his family into a psychopath?"

(135,425 posts)Guess he didn't have a great cover for his US WEEKLY gossip magazine, so he wanted to grab some free publicity by publishing a cover he knew wouldn't go over well in some quarters and would create a news story--poke the bereaved, rub salt in the wounds of the suffering, and cause people to comment about how much or how little they care that the feelings of others are affected.
I agree with Lawrence O'Donnell on this issue:

(24,096 posts)almost innocent looking, that some people are upset?
I don't understand the upset, try as I might to be in those shoes in Boston that day - I can't see a photo on a cover of a magazine being something to get upset about considering that day overall.
That's the only thing I can think of why - the pic isn't of an ugly, mean looking creature from hell and this confuses people.

(9,748 posts)The article was great and a total blow to those who claim Obama came from the Chicago Machine (which shows serious signs of having died some time ago anyway; people just haven't noticed).
But I agree that THIS cover is incredibly innocuous.

(20,226 posts)was hanging out with his friends, smoking dope, talking about rap music and girls - not just months before the Boston Marathon - but just a day or two before the Boston Marathon. Almost everyone who knew him described him as really, really nice kid. But in fact he did go out and commit a heinous crime. The way Rolling Stone displayed his picture on their front page - drives that message home. It is a mind boggling story.
