We Can Do Better

Yesterday, somewhere along the way, I read the words “we can do better.”

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved my country with all my heart. That has never changed.

I was totally in love with the idealism that the founders of this country worked to instill in our laws at the highest level. I believed in the Pledge of allegiance: “with liberty and justice for all.” I said those words and I believed in them. I believed that America was a place where it had come to pass, because that was what I was told.

As I grew into my teen years I learned that was not quite so. And now, nearing sixty, I know it has not yet come around.

It has made me feel sad, helpless, and sometimes hopeless to see the tearing down of our nation by those who would still keep slaves if they could. To those who would still wish less for others than the dignity and honor of being a full human being, because of the color of their skin, the shape of their eyes, or their family of origin.

I want to hold my country with the same kind of open pride I did when I was a child. But we need to do better.

If anything good is to come out of the senseless death of a young black man, it is that we must spur our country on to do better. We must hold our lawmakers accountable. Stop making laws that defy the spirit of this country. Laws that defile the spirit of of all goodness that is a part of us. For our Creator is in each of us and makes us all of the same fine stuff. I am you and you are me, in God.

We can do better.
