Don't get me wrong, I was enthralled by the landing and still consider it to be a great achievement.

But politics was behind it, not science.
Cold-War politics, "We gotta beat the Rooskies there!"

We did, but after Apollo 17, nothing much.

It was the spectacular Pioneer and Voyager probes that really expanded our horizons.
