New study assesses America's sagging reputation abroad

New study assesses America's sagging reputation abroad

By Courtney Subramanian @cmsubJuly 19, 2013

It seems there’s no love for America abroad, or at least there’s less of it, according to a new study from the Pew Research Center. The United States’ global image has seen a steady decline since 2003 — when the Iraq invasion began — and has diminished even among longstanding allies like Britain, France and Germany.

Surveying 39 countries among 37,653 respondents, the study released on Thursday shows the percentage of people who view the U.S. positively has dropped over the last decade. The most negative impression stems from parts of the Muslim world, particularly Pakistan, Jordan and Egypt. Pakistan’s unfavorable view is no surprise, with deep-rooted tensions intensifying over the use of drones.
Drone attacks, it seems, have also been an international point of contention. Half or more of people in 31 of the 39 countries surveyed disapprove of U.S. drone strikes against extremist groups. In fact, the only nations in which a majority support the use of drones are Israel (64%), Kenya (56%) and the U.S. (61%).

President Obama hasn’t helped build a more favorable impression of America, either. According to the report, his international approval ratings are lower now than when he first took office. In fact, approval of his international policies has declined by double digits in Britain, Poland and France; in China, it has dropped to half of what it was in 2009.

I used to make fun of the crazy right wingers who claimed that the folks on the left hated America.

It made no sense to me.

But now I understand where they get the idea. There actually are some on the left who do seem to hate America. They root for failure almost as much as Rush and the Tea party. Just for different reasons.

America's standing in the world drops ... cause for celebration! Who knew?

gauging global opinions of the USA, the American president, US foreign policy, etc., isn't "celebrating"? I don't see any commentary appended to the excerpt from Time; it's an opportunity for discussion and questioning why this is, and how it might change. Let's face it, the average American is very parochial, very insular, very inward-looking; most people don't have any idea what the rest of the world might happen to think of America.

In some ways, the questions this survey asks are in themselves a product of that insularity and parochialism; asking people in Britain, France, Germany, et al whether they "like American ideas about democracy" or "are positive about American-style democracy"? Because none of those countries is a democracy, or if they are they're clearly inferior to the USA because, I don't know, FREEDOM? It manages to be both insecure and insulting.

Yeah, it slipped a little since 2009, but that's to be expected.

Or some other shit from the Bush years?

I wouldn't be surpised...many at DU have become ridiculously knee-jerk about anything that might looks a teensy bit unfavorable towards Obama
