Or is it just trendy today because the Florida State prosecutor couldn't convict water for being wet?
I know we hate the South in here, but the Northwest has SYG laws as well. Are we righting off more than half the states in the Union, or are we going to work to fill the legislatures with Dems and change the laws from within?

I don't know. I don't write the rules. Maybe they should. Who are these boycotters anyway? Do they have a website? Maybe we could learn more there.
Do you think we should all just ignore where gross injustice occurs? Or should we respond in some other way you'd wish to govern? I think people should be allowed to respond how they want when crap like this happens, whether or not it pleases anyone.

This state gave the country Senators Walkin' Lawton Chiles and Bob Graham. We also gave you Representative Claude Pepper. They were from the Old Florida.
The population of Florida has increased from 8,851,176 in 1970 to 19,317,568 in 2012. That is 10,466,392 more than in 1970. An estimated 85% of those people moved here from other states.
Now tell me that it's all because we have always been a backwater and that's why things are so screwed up in this state. No one said that Yankees are "evil." I moved here from a "Yankee" state myself in the early '70s. However in the '80s, most of the people moving here were Republicans and this state has never recovered from that.

Of course you probably opposed boycotting Sun City too. Predictable, white folks can always justify why their racism and opposition to anti-racist political-action isn't about racism.
It's still a ball in Florida's court...if they want the tourism and concert revenue back all they have to do is shitcan their SYG law. If they can't get around to that in the next 2 years, clearly it's not all that important to them.
And...yes...presumably anybody willing to change their vote from Democratic to Republican over a boycott against SYG is probably a racist or a gun nut. Sorry, non-racists and non-gun-nuts support political action to advance progressive ideals and combat racism and unrestrained RKBA.

(24,853 posts)You're talking about a major hit in the pocketbook, especially for the rappers. Take MI, IL, IN, NC, SC, GA Al, MS, LA, and the rest out of their bank accounts and how are they going to make their mortgages? Pay for their Bentleys?
As for the others? Stewart, Madonna, The Stones, and Stevie Wonder have a collective age of about a thousand years or so. They've made their money and spent it and that's the only reason they're still plugging away but they're only in the game for a few more years anyway... before the lot of them start assuming room temperature.
I find it a strange mindset: I don't like this Stand Your Ground thingy everyone's been talking about, so I'll punish my creditors and my fans. What's more; I doubt any of the above could talk about Stand Your Ground for more than a minute before they run out of things to say.

(10,175 posts)Jackson says his Rainbow PUSH Coalition will consider pressuring groups to isolate Florida after the Zimmerman trial.
Rev. Jesse Jackson said Thursday that his Rainbow PUSH Coalition would consider boycotting Florida as "a kind of apartheid state" in the aftermath of the George Zimmerman not-guilty verdict last weekend.
"No doubt, the inclination is to boycott Florida, to stop conventions, to isolate Florida as a kind of apartheid state given this whole 'stand your ground' law, Jackson told CNN. Homicides against blacks have tripled since this law has been in existence."

After the not-guilty verdict in the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a California lawmaker called Wednesday for a statewide boycott of Florida.
Assemblyman Chris Holden, D-Pasadena, is drawing up a resolution on behalf of the California Legislative Black Caucus to urge residents of the Golden State to boycott the Sunshine State until the latter repeals its "stand-your-ground" law.
"Another young black child is dead and nobody is being held accountable, said Holden, who is black and has four teenage sons. "It is a true nightmare scenario for every black parent in America.
"By boycotting Florida tourism, conventions and conferences we send a clear message that the death of an unarmed black teenager cannot be tolerated."

(12,685 posts)IMHO the boycott should include:
1. No vacationing in Florida.
2. Trying to get companies not to hold conferences in Florida.
3. Not buying Florida products.
4. Trying to get as many musicians as possible to boycott the state.
5. Trying to get sought after college athletic recruits to say thanks but no thanks.
6. Encouraging Floridians who want to join the boycott to shop online instead of at their local stores. This will decrease Florida's sale tax revenue.
A website that listed Florida products and companies with planned conferences would be helpful.
By focusing on Florida and making it fold, other states may follow suit because they don't want to be the next state targeted.

selective boycotting.
Whether it's just boycotting one thing (orange juice) or just boycotting one state (Florida).
I have a serious problem with the idea that not boycotting Florida is "ignoring where gross injustice occurs".
So, Florida, for the moment, gets to be the Ogre du jour. Because gross injustice happened there.
What about states where gross injustice hasn't yet occurred, but where the SYG law is still on the books?
Doesn't it make sense to boycott them as well? I mean, if this is REALLY about SYG laws. Is it better to boycott states that have SYG in order to prevent another Zimmerman/Martin incident from ever happening?
Or, what...do we wait till till some other person dies because of SYG?
If people are going to boycott based on doing away with SYG, then they need to boycott ALL places with SYG. If it works, then they've prevented another tragic incident like we witnessed this past year.
If they want to be selective...well...I guess it's up to them, but I don't know if I'd feel all that great knowing my actions could have prevented yet another senseless death.
