(6,578 posts)The decision to jettison the bombs was made with the authorization of the Australian Defense Force, a United States Navy spokesman, Cmdr. William Marks, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He said the chosen location, about 62 miles off Australias northeastern coast, had been selected to minimize damage to the reef.

(216 posts)The munitions were dropped 30km from the nearest reef and 50 km offshore into 60m of water.
This info from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority report where they reference this as a "low risk to the marine environment"
