Air conditioning, either window or central, didn't reach 50% of US homes until the early '70s.

And the British Isles are a lot cooler in summer than most of the US. London is about as far north as the northern end of Vancouver Island off British Columbia.

Their of a "small cottage" is probably a pretty good sized place. Just smaller than a castle. Not like my 700 sq. ft. cottage.
