http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/19/health/hpv-vaccine-found-to-help-with-cancers-of-throat.html?_r=0A vaccine that protects women against cervical cancer also appears to protect them against throat cancers caused by oral sex, and presumably would protect men as well, according to a study released Thursday.
Rates of this throat cancer have soared in the past 30 years, particularly among heterosexual middle-aged men. About 70 percent of oropharyngeal cancers are now caused by sexually transmitted viruses, up from 16 percent in the 1980s. The epidemic made headlines last month when the actor Michael Douglas told a British newspaper that his throat cancer had come from performing oral sex.
This is a very nice paper, said Dr. Marshall R. Posner, medical director for head and neck cancer at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, who was not involved in the study. We expected this thats why we want everyone to vaccinate both boys and girls. But theres been no proof.
Dr. Eric J. Moore, a Mayo Clinic surgeon specializing in these cancers, said the study was very encouraging.
But remember, he added. It only works if youre vaccinated prior to contracting the infection. Once youre 40 and have had multiple sexual partners, its not going to help.

I know at least some of the issue with Michael Douglas was not the content of what he said but that he outed Catherine Zeta Jones as having HPV to the world.
I feel he probably just needed to be more thoughtful before speaking. I don't think it was worth the outcry that went up.

(920 posts)Who he has sex with. He implied it and it made some folks angry.
Or you could read it as bragging, as some people did and they got angry.
(I'm saying this an observer, I was not angry at the time, nor do I care much now).
Either way, I don't think the problem was that he was saying something incorrect, just that he was kind of tactless in delivery. He, himself, apologized and clarified what he meant after it happened. Sometimes things just don't come out right.
