If he had come forward at the time he announced he was going to run and said that even after he resigned he struggled to control his behavior and continued to send texts and photos even though he knew it was "wrong" and a "mistake" but that he and his wife had worked it through and that he had gotten the "treatment" he said he would get when he resigned, then the outing of new photos and texts would have been far less damaging.

But he tried to sweep it under the rug, suggesting vaguely that there might be more texts and pictures without indicating that they might be from as recently as 9 or 10 months ago.

He could have come out with this information himself at the start, and potentially somewhat defused it before it blew up.

Now I even wonder, what else is out there, that he knows about, that he hopes nobody will mention? And in politics, that is a futile hope. If someone knows, it will come out… and by not releasing the information yourself, you simply allow the opposition to release it at the time it will serve them best.

With the baggage he had coming into this, his only hope was full preemptive disclosure.
