As President Obama Was Talking About "Obamacare" In His Address Today...

Last edited Wed Jul 24, 2013, 02:11 PM - Edit history (1)

A man shouted out "my daughter has insurance now!"

The President replied "I appreciate that...that's what this is about....that is what we have been fighting for!"

That just shows the Republicans that President Obama doesn't just talk, he ACTS! And those actions are affecting REAL AMERICANS!

"My adult sons have insurance now!"

They don't. It's not THAT affordable.

I'd even more like to be able to shout, "My family has health CARE now."

I have insurance, but can't afford the care. Insurance doesn't guarantee care. It still costs, and my deductible has skyrocketed. The only time I get care is when I can't function without it. It puts me into debt. I'm still paying off the treatment for an abscess 6 months ago that only used about half of the deductible. My premium, though, is 30% MORE than my son's mortgage.

Check and see if you'd be eligible for lower deductibles and copays, as well as a cheaper premium and subsides.

depending on what OEBB negotiates for us. The plans are up; my plan shows no changes in deductibles or benefits, but the costs have not been posted yet.

Those will show up in the next month, so that we can choose from those plans offered. I have the cheapest plan offered, which is the only plan I can afford the premium for. Of course, it means the deductibles are high enough that I don't get care outside of emergencies.

Both have looked at what will be available to them on the exchange next year.

Neither find what the exchange will offer "affordable," meaning fitting their budget without sacrificing luxuries like rent/mortgage, utilities, and food.

Perhaps you've missed them but there are several Obamacare calculators online to help people figure out their costs. Also sites to help you determine the penalties

Compare and contrast to current median wage and working poverty levels - maybe even talk to real people struggling with real budgets

..you'll find several 'sources' for the general statement that the penalty will be cheaper in many cases

and oh-so-very-gracious-and-benevolent-and-generous lowering of my rates, with a 90-dollar check. It was a pleasant surprise. But I looked at it and said "My ASS. That was no Lord-Bountiful thing you can take credit for out of the "goodness" of your "heart". That was the Affordable Care Act - that MADE you do it.

Sometimes when business and corporate America won't do the right thing, we need the government to step in and MAKE them do it. Just as very few kids are willing just voluntarily to pick up after themselves. You have to MAKE them do it. Or if they won't do their homework voluntarily, you have to MAKE them do it. My son never EVER wanted to wake up in the morning for school. We had to MAKE him do it.

They both had those lovely marvelous "pre-existing conditions."

NO LONGER!!!

And funny enough, my friend the ardent GOP-supporter, even while a union member and the parent of a daughter of childbearing age, was against it. Until she found out her kids were actually covered under her insurance. She shut up about how awful "Obamacare" was, and I never heard any more Pox Noise-issued talking points out of her about that, from then on. The kid who drums in my kid's band is a childhood cancer survivor. His parents were THRILLED to discover that they could keep him covered until he's 26. THRILLED!!! And relieved as hell! He's been in full remission since age seven, but his mom still worries about him every day. And by Jove, he's insured for another three years - long enough for the band, hopefully, to get on its feet in some way.

I got stuck with that option after I went out on maternity leave and the company's insurance plan only covered me for a few weeks after I left. And of course, around the same time, my paychecks stopped, too - they only stayed in place for a minimum amount of time. So to stay covered, for myself postpartum AND my new baby, cost $800 a month. That was in 1989. It wasn't something we felt we could afford to let lapse. But it's really awful when a) your paycheck and company insurance both disappear and b) you have to pay through the nose to maintain some level of coverage, but without that regular paycheck to cover that extra expense.

she's about 17 now ... and for years, the insurance companies would not cover her for anything more than basic kid illnesses and sports injuries. She had kidney stones and they claimed "pre-existing condition" and would not cover it.

Until ACA. It was costing my sister a fortune, now its covered.

And my niece can never be denied insurance in the future.

and with the expansion of Med-Cal (Medicaid) and Medicare, more people are now under some type of health care coverage. I would love 100% of Americans be covered by health care and single payer enacted but alas you still have opposition and the gopers want to repeal it altogether.

And his wife has a serious heart condition. If they lost her insurance through her work (he's self employed) they would not be able to get insurance now no matter how much they would pay. No more, thanks to Obamacare. Now they can sleep at night.
I despise the GOP with a white-hot passion.
