My husband is one of the best autocad drafters there is (accurate, detailed, think on his own, etc.) and worked his way up to a plumbing designer at a local company in Dallas. Within a year of reaching this status, he was laid off (this was right when the economy tanked just before Obama's first term). Since then he has found work only through temp agencies for alleged temp to perm jobs. We now understand that "temp-to-perm" means we're never really going to hire you, ever, just pay you a lower wage with no benefits, be grateful you have a job even if you are overskilled, blah blah blah...
So, everytime he gets laid off he is forced to accept the next offer that comes along, usually at a lower wage which means that he's also entitled to less and less unemployment wages.
So he is now going to see if the Texas Workforce Commission can send him back to school to learn yet another career; but what career? He's excellent in math and his latest job involved the metric system and international work.
Do ya'll have any ideas what career move he could easily make without years of school?
Has anyone else experienced this temp to perm issue?
For any workers heading to all these great jobs in Texas that Perry is touting keep this in mind.

(838 posts)There are definately more job listings there than Monster or the paper. But Craigslist?

(5,162 posts)they are mostly contract. This is the future for all of us. Sorry for your situation, but if he is a cad monster he will never be out of work.

(838 posts)Are you in this area? Most of those jobs in the link you sent were not in plumbing or in a part of our area that he could get to work affordably without a 1-2 hour one way commute or paying tolls that could easily exceed $20 a day which is more than one hour at the current pay scale. We won't even talk about the price of gas. Damn, he's already seeing a $10,000 year reduction in wages. Can't afford much more. Of course, he will probably have to suck it up and do it.

(838 posts)would be perfect. Anything on DART Rail, we've got access to the Blue Line. He's been working in Mesquite which was a perfect commute. Anything along The Shrub and North to Plano. Rockwall, Rowlett. Ft Worth, Frisco, Southlake way too far to make it even worth the drive. Thanks for asking!

(10,283 posts)have him get in touch with me. We are looking for someone to apprentice learning CNC machining at a very small startup company in Dallas. It's part time for now, but hopefully we'll grow into full time positions.
We make camera robotics for the film industry.

(34,582 posts)and, as noted, they are nothing but a scam to get cheap labor. I can't help you in the job regard, other than say good luck.

(838 posts)at the very least he used to get the maximum unemployment benefits. Not this time around. And the next future employer can pay him less money, and so on and so on...

(838 posts)I have a great long term job that keeps us afloat and keeps us with healthcare. I have researched moving to other areas but the pay cut to me would be too extreme. Nothing is out of the question though.

(838 posts)Unfortunately, we are getting use to this roller coaster. So long our safety bar remains in place....we really shouldn't complain.
