ACLU Ad: The President Lied to the American People and Broke the Law

ACLU Ad: The President Lied to the American People and Broke the Law

Remember whistleblower Thomas Tamm?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023032225

The program was in fact a wide range of covert surveillance activities authorized by President Bush in the aftermath of 9/11. At that time, White House officials, led by Vice President Dick Cheney, had become convinced that FISA court procedures were too cumbersome and time-consuming to permit U.S. intelligence and law-enforcement agencies to quickly identify possible Qaeda terrorists inside the country. (Cheney's chief counsel, David Addington, referred to the FISA court in one meeting as that "obnoxious court," according to former assistant attorney general Jack Goldsmith.) Under a series of secret orders, Bush authorized the NSA for the first time to eavesdrop on phone calls and e-mails between the United States and a foreign country without any court review. The code name for the NSA collection activities—unknown to all but a tiny number of officials at the White House and in the U.S. intelligence community—was "Stellar Wind."

No, much better than watergate.

Oh, and look:

Criticism alters US drone program in Pakistan
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10023338376

The CIA embraced the measures, feeling the drone program may be under threat from public scrutiny, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the classified program publicly.

...

Senior Pakistani army officers made it clear that the program could not continue at the tempo it was being carried out and expressed concern that civilian casualties were breeding more militants, said the U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

...

President Barack Obama signaled the administration's new approach to drones in a landmark speech in May in which he said attacks would be carried out only on "terrorists who pose a continuing and imminent threat to the American people" and when there is "near-certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured."

(gosh - so they were not aimed at imminent threats to the US before??)

U.S. officials often point to Pakistan's failure to shoot down the slow-flying drones as evidence that they aren't sincere in wanting the program to stop, although this would likely cause a huge crisis in relations between the two countries

Not to mention we had Yemen lie for us and claim they were the ones doing the attacks in their country when civilians were killed.

--Don't care if someone sees it all as worse than watergate or not, wrong is still wrong. Though some will defend the killing of kids and other innocent civilians because their loyalty is to a single person and screw everyone else in the world.

Obama should put an end to the program that collects metadata. Congress has warned him. He should pay attention.

This program will not get more popular. It will become less and less popular.

"Obama should put an end to the program that collects metadata. Congress has warned him. He should pay attention."

...is legal. Congress is claiming that loopholes exists. The program is finally getting the strict oversight that should have been there all along. Congress has also proposed ways to fix the program.

Do you support Senator Leahy's Patriot Act/FISA reform bill?
