Let the Sun Shine In

The House of Representatives narrowly defeated a proposal that would have seriously hampered the National Security Agency’s recently revealed efforts to collect telephone records from millions of Americans.

According to USA Today, the House voted down the proposal 217-205 in an incredibly close vote. The proposal, sponsored by Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.), would have limited spending on phone surveillance to court orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court against those who are the subject of an investigation. Essentially, it would have completely defunded the NSA’s controversial programs to collect telephone metadata on domestic calls placed by Americans.

Let the sun shine in. Let the sun shine on the secret courts, this subversion of democracy and national shame. Let the sun shine in on Gitmo, this atrocity brought upon us by the forces of hate and darkness. Let the sun shine in on the surveillance of all Americans, on a scale and level that would make the Nazis or the Stasi blush with shame. Let the sun shine in on corporate money flooding election coffers, subverting and destroying the principles our founding fathers built this nation on.
Let the sun shine in to our hearts, to show us how foolish and unfounded the fears are that make us hate those brothers and sisters who don't have the same skin color or sexual preference as us.
Let the sun shine in on the darkest corners and recesses of my heart, that I might see the way through my own mistakes and have the confidence and courage to do what is right, despite the consequences.

Let the Sun Shine In.

How soon we forget...

For those as ancient as myself, this is from the movie "Hair". If memory serves, two guys in the same Army unit had the same name. The one guy couldn't get a pass to see his wife and new child. The guy with the same name lets the guy use his weekend pass. The guy on leave sleeps in and comes back late, during which time his friend is shipped to Vietnam on mistaken identiy. He dies there.
