Personally, I think he's done a great job.
I was actually rather hesitant at first. I loved his segments, but didn't think he'd be able to carry it over to the host position. He's proved me wrong, however.
Don't get me wrong, I still look forward to Jon Stewart's return, but John Oliver has been a worthy fill-in.

He should have his own show.
I hate to say it, but I don't miss Jon because John is doing such a great job.
I haven't missed an episode.

(34,845 posts)I can imagine it will be difficult going back to playing second fiddle to Stewart, though. But both Stewart and Oliver are top notch!
I'm always right. When I'm wrong I admit it.
So then I'm right about being wrong.
(35,445 posts)It's all scuttlebutt, but when Letterman retires, Colbert is an early favorite to replace him in that spot. If he does, Oliver make take over the 11:30 show after Stewart.

(4,482 posts)Stephen does an entirely different type of humor than Dave.

(43,191 posts)....is that he's for so long crafted his own pseudo personality (i.e. a clueless Bill O'Reilly type) that shifting back into his own actual personality for the Letterman show might come off as a big awkward.

(16,646 posts)I' ve seen him in a few "straight" interviews. He has a very solid ability to hover on that edge of seriousness and satire. He can make very biting points in a very friendly way. He also is a fantastic interviewer in that he actually listens to the interviewee. I'm impressed at how often his next question is truly based upon the answer to the previous one, not just the next question on his list. He seems to bring a certain improvisational approach to an interview.

(41,692 posts)The question is---how would he do with interviews--- I am stunned out how knowledgeable he is with his guests... most certainly does his homework.
If they give him a show I will absolutely watch it.,

(31,706 posts)...Oliver's done an excellent job in following Jon's format and injecting his own personality into the role; a very tricky job. The heart and soul of the show are some of the finest writers who crank out quality stuff night after night. The key that helps both Stewart and Oliver is their background as stand-ups and writers that enables them to transition and ad lib. Oliver's star has been on the rise at Comedy Central and I wouldn't be surprised if he's given his own series soon...
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)it was obvious that Colbert has a lot more talent to ad lib and engage in improvisational comedy much more than Jon Stewart.
Jon is a funny guy--but he relies on set pieces and his other comedy team along with writers whereas Colbert is laugh out louf funny on his own.
Tommy_Carcetti
(43,191 posts)It was on Comedy Central back in the late 1990s.
Colbert was on it before he went on the daily show. He starred with Amy Sedaris (sister of writer David Sedaris) and was hilarious.
You could tell he was quite talented even from then.

(31,706 posts)...the other night Larry Wilmore did another one of his great pieces...Oliver played off of him just as though it was Stewart. It showed me that Larry scripted everything that went on...including Jon/John's lines. Colbert is by far one of the best ad-libbers I've ever seen...and is able to enhance any interview or bit. While TDS revolves around the correspondents and contributors Colbert revolves around him...
Cheers...

(8,361 posts)The art of interviewing in an entertaining way is underestimated. It is difficult. Colbert sucked at it in the early going of his show and every now and then still talks too much over his guests.

(10,237 posts)I will miss him and hope he gets his own regular show maybe replacing some of the dreck on comedy central .

(46,585 posts)That's really a nod to Jon Stewart. His team is putting out a top notch show in his absence.

(78,249 posts)I was apprehensive at first. I thought that Brian Williams spoke for all of us when he said "It's another half hour of Nick at Nite."
But he's been great. And no one else could have done "On Her Majesty's Secret Cervix" like him!

(36,418 posts)I hope he comes back from the Mideast where he's directing a film about Iranian dissidents with a fresh approach. I also hope the film isn't war propaganda, which is the last thing we need.
Oliver has been brilliant.

(1,941 posts)I enjoy his hosting but I think he really hit it out of the park with the power outage, breaking the Daily Show and then leading an acapella singalong of the show's theme by emergency light.

(37,428 posts)I guess I would eventually miss Stewart's American take on what are mostly American stories--but Oliver has been superb.

(7,963 posts)It's been fun to read the responses. I agree with all of them, except that I do agree that Colbert is an excellent interviewer and would hold his own with anyone if he fills Letterman's slot.
I love both Jon and John and I hope they both have long, successful careers. We need them both.
LadyHawkAZ
(6,199 posts)but oddly enough he's really bloomed as a host. He's not Stewart or Colbert, but he's good. I'm rooting for him to get his own show.
