(15,682 posts)Who are these people? Why have they (I assume) killed this beautiful animal? I thought we protected against this kind of kill. One of the saddest pictures ever.

(56,582 posts)This guy in South Africa runs a rhino ranch and has the largest rhino heard in the world. How he pays for it is allowing hunting of "surplus" males at about $150k per.

(14,400 posts)the asshole and his canned hunt. These morons paid tens of thousands of dollars to more or less shoot a rhino in an enclosed pen.
They usually tend to forget that part of the story when they're relating it to fellow assholes at the gun club.

(39,665 posts)The money these hunters spend for the permit to kill a rhino is astounding, I understand around a half million $US. Half of that goes to the government directly for the permit, half to a trust that's meant to focus on preserving the animals. I can't imagine it's administered to any standard that would impress.

(998 posts)"There are over 1000 canned hunting sites available for your killing pleasure in the U.S. All kinds of rare, exotic animals are fenced in on commercial hunting grounds that you can shoot just about any which way you choose -- for a price. Zebras cost somewhere around $4,500 to put a bullet through. Lodging costs are on top of the kill price. Killing a Transcaspian Urial Sheep will set you back upwards of around $17,000 while a Siberian Ibex is more than $19,000."

Remember, Ted Nugent likes to hunt animals from helicopters.

(30,947 posts)It is definitely a canned hunt. I was copy editor for 30 outdoors magazine across the U.S. And even most legitimate hunters do not believe in canned hunts.

Canned hunt I'm sure.

(1,057 posts)Not exactly what one would normally call a canned hunt, the term is usually applied to "hunts" which take place in small enclosures (a couple of acres).
Trophy hunting is not my cup of tea but there is a pretty good argument to be made that this type of hunting will do far more to protect the viability of the species then hurt it and if that's the case then I have no problem with it. The meat does not go to waste, it's donated to feed the local poor, which is also not a bad thing.
Modern conservation management utilizes sport hunting as an effective tool to manage game populations, that's simply a fact.

(7,720 posts)They pretty much drove right up to where the old, sterile, bull was taking a dust bath.
While I am not a fan of canned hunts or even hunts on large game farms, you are correct that an argument can be made that this kind of rhino hunt will help preserve the species more than harming it. They have a surplus of bulls. The bulls fight with each other and they do not need all of them to best breed the most offspring.
There are more of some species of African antelope in Texas than there are in Africa.
Crepuscular
(1,057 posts)using scouts to track specific animals and using a truck to get to where you can stalk the animal does not a canned hunt make. People do it all the time out west, driving and glassing for deer, elk or antelope and then stalking them. It's how much of the hunting is done in Africa.
Canned "hunts" typically take place in very small, high fence enclosures, where the animal being executed has no reasonable chance to flee, that was not what occurred in this case, 16,000 acres gives the animal ample room to escape.
