Discovery Channel has been running this 30 second promo. Some think it to be hilarious. Others are outraged. Things are so heated that Snopes had to get involved (it is a staged commercial done with special effects, not real film of a real re-release).
How do you see it?

(55,894 posts)reminds me of a Simpsons with Free Willy.
Simpson's Plot- Willy is an orca and while he tries to be free by jumping out of his enclosure, he doesn't make it and crushes the boy who tried to help him.

(6,199 posts)it hasn't gotten any better in the 1,842,633 times it's been broadcast since.
I detest TV but the SO watches a lot of Discovery Channel, and that ad has been aired to death; even if I had liked it the first time, I'd still be sick to death of it by now.

(3,179 posts)unless directed at the most vulnerable, such as children or animals. Abhorrence, when confronted with such humor, seems to be a visceral reaction I've experienced from a very early age.

(6,199 posts)I understand how nature works, animals eat other animals etc., but I don't think it's a funny thing to watch.

(67,818 posts)I think its totally hilarious and I laugh at it every time, even when I am alone watching it.
But then, I also think earwigs are funny, what with the big, fake pinchers on their tails.

(529 posts)my morbid curiosity compels me. What happened off the Farallon Islands?

(20,606 posts)It's a great book.
The author went to live with the guys on the Farallon Islands who study marine life.
There are tons of great whites there because of the large seal population. They even knew some of the sharks and named them.
The program has since been cancelled, but was operational for a while.
One day, they saw thru their telescope, a boat pull up full of people.
They watched in horror as the people on the boat let loose a seal they had nursed back to health into the ocean.
It was immediately eaten.

(20,317 posts)This is obviously a flashier dramatization of it, but I recall an incident a few years back where pretty much the same thing happened. A seal was released after having been nursed back to health, and just as it was swimming back out into the water, was killed by a shark. The crowd gasped and you could tell there was this flash of anger and confusion that moved through the crowd... but there was no one to be angry at. I mean, that's nature for you.

(249 posts)Put me down for "incredibly tasteless" due to the mawkish affection towards the fictional seal (whose name I took to be a nose reference) and... Well, if you halfway sympathize with rescued animals, especially cute ones, it's a rather disgusting shock material.
And if Anyone else says "it's nature", I'm going to ask them their objections to being eaten by a bear.
