MSNBCs Al Sharpton took Bill OReillys recent comments about race head-on Friday evening, after the Fox anchor singled him out last night for being in business with people who put out entertainment harmful to children. Sharpton called it ridiculous that OReilly is somehow the expert on what the vast majority of African-Americans want.
In the time since George Zimmermans acquittal, Sharpton declared, some right-wingers have gone into overdrive to push the most negative stereotypes of the African-American community for their own gain. He lumped OReilly in with Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity as the unholy triumvirate of right-wing reaction that has been desperate not to have a real conversation about the injustices of the justice system.
Sharpton mocked OReilly and others for their sudden concern about gang violence in Chicago, something he said many of us in African-American community have been talking about for months. Better late than never, I guess. On OReillys focus on the breakdown of the African-American family, Sharpton asked, Is Bill OReilly saying George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin because Trayvon was born out of wedlock, even though he wasnt? Thats ridiculous, right?
All of this is an effort to avoid addressing the urgent topic that something is fundamentally flawed with our justice system if laws like Stand Your Ground allow a kid to be gunned down, Sharpton continued. But Rush, Hannity, OReilly dont want to talk about that.
Sarcastically calling OReilly the expert on the vast majority of what African-Americans want, Sharpton said, we need a real conversation about justice in this country, not the same old right-wing divide and conquer garbage. Bill OReilly, the Willie Horton stuff has got to go.

They are two sides of the same corporate coin.
I wonder how many hours of each of their programming is simply repackaging the other's content and commenting upon it?

(20,450 posts)Sharpton is saying, or do you agree with O'Reilly?

AND
I don't agree with O'Reilly.
I think they are both grandstanding jerks.
Opposite side of the same coin... they need each other to function.
See how that works?

(20,450 posts)I don't think one can compare the likes of Bill O'Reilly to Al Sharpton, the former who is a file, racist jerk.

(31,706 posts)...it's a tool in trade of hate radio and Faux Noise. O'Reilly was preaching to his choir...chanting the song that's been number one on their hit parade since day one: Racism. From BillO's "whitebread" 1950s view of the world, when blacks began demanding civil rights that opened up the whole can of worms: woman's rights, gay rights and so on. The election of Barack Obama signified a dual track...one, that racism no longer exists because a man of African-American background had been elected President (despite all of BillO's best fearmongering) and thus racism must no longer exist and what he says about race...especially blacks is purely "commentary" and surely nothing else. The second...and more sinister...is stoking up anger using a long-time right wing buzzwords and dogwhistles that is at the heart of those defending Zimmerman as being some hero. It's pandering to the lowest degree and any attack on O'Reilly is then viewed by the great unhinged as "vindication" of their fears.
It's how the parallel universe works...
