"Theres still a lot of confusion across the nation about whether or not marijuana is effective for cancer patients. Odds are youve heard something about it but werent sure whether the information was reliable or definitive. So, in order to help clear things up, here is a list of 25 studies showing that marijuana cures cancer, categorized by the type of cancers being cured in each study. As you sort through the articles, note that the consistent theme between them is that cannabis shrinks tumors and selectively targets cancer cells. As bills and voter initiatives to legalize medical marijuana spread from state to state, remember that were not just talking about mitigating the side effects of chemo (though this is another viable use), were talking about curing the cancer itself as well as preventing its spread. Ive taken the liberty of only including articles from credible scientific journals, removing any biased or otherwise improperly cited studies. Enjoy!"

(8,303 posts)I didn't see any "cures" here, and at least one of your studies has nothing to do with pot.
I don't know what to say. I wish it were so easy.
A more reasoned presentation.

(17,608 posts)it seems only fair that patients should be able to "self-medicate" with marijuana if they choose. (I know that isn't in the scope of the o.p. but I wanted to make that clear first.)
I read the abstract on the link given for ovarian cancer. It's a bit over my head but does sound hopeful. Doesn't say it "cures" the cancer but that there are indicators that it could be therapeutic.
Yo_Mama
(8,303 posts)But I am strongly in favor of legalizing pot, and for patients with cancer who wish to use marijuana to mitigate the effects, I think it is literally immoral to deny that to them.
HOWEVER, using marijuana is unlikely to deliver the chemicals to the receptors in the dosages being studied. The quite promising early research on anandamide (THC receptor) may account for apparently statistically lower incidence rates of cancer in high exercise groups, etc.
But anandamide could only be a factor in some cancers, and the idea that either marijuana, or components, or anandamide could cure all or most cancers has already been shown to be false in the lab. Cancers vary. Nor would these ever be cures. Any molecule with the potential to inhibit some cancers is worthy of further investigation. It won't work for all, and if it ever does become a promising therapy for some cancers, it will need to be delivered probably in pretty high concentrations.
The sort of woo expressed in the the OP and some of the other posts kills a lot more people than one might think.
I am currently dealing with cancer victims in my own family and I would warn everyone against this sort of laetrile type crap. Smoke it if you want to, but don't delude yourself that you are treating your cancer by doing so. You aren't.
Checking your Vitamin D levels and keeping those up will probably prove to do more to lower cancer incidence rates than any amount of pot consumption.

(114,904 posts)support that claim.
I know people that tried to cure cancer with cannabis and used regimens that made those claims. My best friend did so. She's dead.

(3,183 posts)Maybe there's a certain dosage or some other factor but I do know the more this is studied the more encouraging it becomes.
I spent an hour and a half wading through some "study" by the "Netherlands Institute for Neurological Studies" to find that THC, when applied topically, does appear to kill cancer cells. And with equal frequency, it kills healthy cells.
An hour and a half I'll never get back.

(2,322 posts)...helps them sleep and so keep going and getting cured. I mean, does it really need to do more than that, really need to be a miracle cure to be accepted as medically legal?

(8,303 posts)edited to add:
What I mean is that pot doesn't need to have a more than palliative effect for cancer patients to be legalized for their use. A palliative effect can have a huge positive impact.
Also it has been shown to have a positive impact for some AIDS patients.

(44,228 posts)Cancer is not a single disease, but is hundreds of similar diseases. What might be effective for one, or a few types of cancer, doesn't do bupkis for other types.
Poor science reporting and wildly exaggerated claims don't help anyone.

(5,198 posts)Cancer is a wide spectrum disease. Cannabis may cure some folks cancer while making others more comfortable while having it. It is a personal choice to use this herb while ill, and people should have the right and access to making this choice.
I think this herb is extending my life, when ever I have gone off my maintenance dose, my symptoms come back. As much as I have enjoyed this herb from time to time, I wish I did not have to be on any drug or herb all the time--but of all the CHOICES this is the one with the least side effects and most benefit!
We should have the FREEDOM of CHOICE when the choice does not cause harm to others. If people can be on opiates legally and we trust they don't drive or fly planes or do brain surgery while stoned, then people who choose this herb should be given the same trust.

RainDog
(28,784 posts)there are many studies that show cannabis inhibits tumor growth for various cancers, but no studies have claimed that cannabis cures cancer - no recognized studies like the ones linked to.
the author is misstating the claims of the peer-reviewed studies by equating "inhibit" with "cure."
this subject is certainly worth more study.
But it's a disservice to people to make claims in this OP that aren't yet accepted by the medical community - tho the medical community thinks this is a useful area of study.
