Bernice King Opposes Marriage Equality, But 'I'm Not The Enemy'

Bernice King, the daughter of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., in a new interview is again invoking his memory as reason she opposes marriage equality. But she also wants LGBT activists to know "I'm not the enemy."

King has in the past said her father “did not take a bullet for same-sex marriage,” and in 2004 she marched in Atlanta alongside antigay Pastor Eddie Long to protest same-sex marriage.

According to the Georgia Voice, King tells Atlanta Magazine in its upcoming August issue that while she opposes marriage equality, she isn't homophobic.

"People have labeled me homophobic. If I was homophobic, I wouldn't have friends who are gay and lesbian, so that can't be true," she said, according to the report. "But because I have a certain belief system, I am now the enemy. And I'm not the enemy. I have love for everybody, period."

You say your not "homophobic well thats fine dear, I won't say I what I think you are (and it isn't pretty). I will post though what someone else said in the comments section of the article (It's very fitting). ""People have labeled me homophobic. If I was homophobic, I wouldn't have friends who are gay and lesbian, so that can't be true," she said, according to the report. "But because I have a certain belief system, I am now the enemy. And I'm not the enemy. I have love for everybody, period."

Replace "homophobic" with "racist" and "gay and lesbian" with "colored" and you have my racist parents and grandparents to a T explaining how they weren't racist even though they supported segregation. According to them, they weren't racist and were terribly offended by anyone who claimed otherwise. They were only defending their beliefs and traditions.

Sounds all too familiar!"

Have a nice day dear.

""Gay and lesbian people have families, and their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union. A constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages is a form of gay bashing and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages."

Coretta was a good person. Bernice is the enemy.

and is willing to do whatever it takes to get it.

Looks like he settled out of court with five of the young men he victimized.

the use of that jet. A preacher with a private jet while people starve in his own city. Bernice digs that.

Desmond Tutu has said he would rather go to hell than worship a homophobic God.

The Nobel peace laureate and anti-apartheid hero was lending his support to a UN-backed campaign for gay rights in his native South Africa.

Though same sex marriages are legal in the country, homosexuals still experience brutal violence. Last month a lesbian was found dead, having been sexually assaulted with a toilet brush.

The retired former Archbishop of Cape Town, 81, is a long-standing campaigner for gay rights, and compared the struggle to that for racial equality in South Africa.
