North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory gives protesters cookies seriouslyBy Mary C. Curtis, Published: August 1
North Carolina GOP Gov. Pat McCrory hand carried chocolate-chip cookies to abortion bill protesters outside the Raleigh governors mansion in a lets-make-up gesture. The surprised recipient said he told her, These are for you. God bless you, God bless you, God bless you. The cookies were returned, and it wasnt because he forgot the milk. The note on the untouched plate read: We want womens health care, not cookies.
The Tuesday scene, described by The News & Observer, was fallout from McCrorys Monday night signing of legislation that, among other provisions, will make clinics adopt some of the regulations that apply to ambulatory surgery centers, and allow health-care providers to opt out of performing abortions if they object. Opponents say the new law will limit access to abortion by forcing clinics to close, while McCrory and the bills supporters say the health and safety of the states citizens, not politics, are whats at stake.
McCrorys sincerity is not the issue. After state health officials sanctioned an Asheville, N.C., clinic on Wednesday for egregious violations that revealed an imminent threat to the health and safety of patients, it was either evidence of the need for greater vigilance or proof that current laws are working, depending on which side you support. But it certainly means the subject of clinic safety will and should remain center stage.
However, McCrorys name on the bill was a cue for endless televised replays of his 2012 pledge during a gubernatorial debate that, if elected, he would not sign any further abortion restrictions into law. In recent Public Policy Polling, the abortion bill was supported by only 34 percent of voters, with 47 percent opposing it. By a similar 48 to 33 margin, voters preferred that McCrory veto the bill (and that number included 25 percent of Republicans).
THE COOKIES WERE RETURNED WITH A NOTE:
The cookies treat for angry dissenters was a clumsy move (they chanted: Hey Pat, that was rude. You wouldnt give cookies to a dude.) and also in keeping with some of the troubles that have plagued McCrory since he made the leap from Charlotte mayor to the most prominent political job in the state. Engaging protesters about the issue of clinic safety would have been a better move.

(29,098 posts)Actually it infuriated me and as a woman enraged me that any elected official could respond to voters like that. What an Ass.

(19,841 posts)Adding more insult, later that night a McCrory staff member delivered slices of cake to a young girl and her mother who were protesting outside the mansion with Occupy Raleigh members. I was like, Thank you very much, but it would be nice if we could have some rights with that,? 12-year-old Madison Kimrey told reporters. McCrory didnt know about the cake incident, his staff said. But Madisons reaction was spot on, nonetheless: I was like, Why? You do realize this is just giving us more ammo against (the governor). I would rather sit down with (him) while were eating cookies.
Duh. A 12-year-old gets the point but McCrory and his staff dont?
The sad thing about these incidents is that they are part of a pattern of condescension and dismissal by this legislature and this governor. With lawmakers calling constituents who disagree with them morons and crazies, and shutting them down with declarations of I am the senator, you are the citizen. You need to be quiet, the denigration has been stark.
Lawmakers discourtesy toward N.C. women has felt particularly raw. Following the way legislators sneakily rolled out the abortion bill without public notice on the day before the July 4th holiday, with the Senate attaching the controversial changes to an unrelated Sharia law bill, and the House to an unrelated motorcycle safety bill, McCrorys offer of cookies was just one pat on the head too many.

(11,441 posts)doesn't get more dickish than that. And I'm happy to report a couple of moderate Republican neighbors are NOT HAPPY. The Teabaggers are, but there's no reasoning with them. 2014 and 2016 cannot come fast enough!

(84,711 posts)Our leadership though...maybe doesn't have it's act together. The "Shock and Awe" done on them by Repugs swift agenda...after the scandals that swirled didn't help along with Purdue pulling out at the last minute in the election leaving them scrambling. That's what I've heard and observed.. We lost some Progressives who could have been "up and comers" after 2008, also....we shall see.

(84,711 posts)(I had forgotten that incredible scene in "House of Cards" (the Netflix Original Miniseries) where they go after protesting teachers with "free food," until I read this.

Gov. Pat McCrory evidently is a fan of House of Cards, the Netflix series about a cynical, manipulative Southern congressman, played by Kevin Spacey. The governor has good taste; it is excellent television.
In one episode, Spaceys character and his wife carry food across a street to protesting teachers. It was a brilliantly orchestrated, deeply cynical gesture and effective. TV footage showed grateful teachers accepting and eating the food.
On July 30, McCrory took a plate of cookies across the street to women protesting his signing new abortion restrictions. But his gesture wasnt so well-received, this being real life and not TV. The protesters returned the cookies.
Rather than copying a political gimmick from TV, the governor might start talking to people who disagree with him and listen to their viewpoints. Otherwise, he might see his political house of cards come tumbling down.
