ALBANY, N.Y. -- New York is warning 16,000 delinquent taxpayers that their driver's licenses will be suspended if they don't pay up.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced a program to suspend the licenses of the state's top tax cheats. The state plans to suspend the driver's licenses of people when they owe the state more than $10,000, Cuomo said. The measure was part of the state budget approved by lawmakers in March.
"Our message is simple: Tax scofflaws who don't abide by the same rules as everyone else are not entitled to the same privileges as everyone else," Cuomo said in a statement.
The state expects to bring in $26 million in uncollected income taxes this fiscal year, which runs through March 31. It expects to raise about $6 million in subsequent years.
The 16,000 scofflaws owe the state $1.1 billion, according to the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. The top delinquent taxpayer is Michael Zurawin from Putnam County, who was reportedly the head of a New York City painting supplies company. He owes $16.7 million, the state said. He could not be reached for comment Monday.
