A local official at the meeting grabbed the shooter and subdued him, Reber said.
(West End Open Space Commission executive director) Bernie Kozen bear-hugged the gunman and took him down, Reber said. He shot the shooter with his own gun.
Rep. Matt Cartwright, who represents the states 17th District, said he was stunned and appalled at the atrocities that claimed the lives of innocent citizens in Ross Township. He said he had heard about what Kozen did to prevent more bloodshed.
Mr. Kozen is a true hero tonight, Cartwright said in an emailed statement.

(597 posts)in this case this guy very well could have had another weapon on him seeing as he left to retrieve more weapons to continue his slaughter. My question is had this hero not stepped up and risked his own life to subdue and shoot the gunman how long would it have taken the police to stop the shooting and how many more would have died.
this seams like a small town so highly likely he out gunned the town police. this could have been much worse.
This presents a very real issue. What do you do when someone is crazy but cant be committed and has not broken any laws that get you banned from gun ownership yet. Had this guy threatened people they could have gotten a restring order which would have allowed the police to take his guns. Question is do you want to be on the entry team to confiscate this guys guns? very real issues and i dont have answers for them

(54,770 posts)I know you can't believe that, but it happens all the time. Elderly lady took down Loughner. At a similar situation to OP, another elderly lady popped the gun holder with her handbag.
All of your "could haves," didn't make a bit of difference in the end. A guy -- with the good sense not to tuck a gun in his pants before venturing out -- handled this situation.

(597 posts)it usually ends with either the police shooting the shooter or taking him down at gun point. assuming he/she does not kill themself first.
im not one of these people that say everyone needs to be armed in all situations.
and that hero prob was following the local law seeing as civilian guns arent allowed in that building and he may not even carry a gun.
i support peoples right to own firearms each state sets their own rules on CCW and allowed buildings. in this case we have criminal who killed people out of anger (sure his legal team will claim mental illness) and a Hero who was unarmed who was able to subdue and shoot the gun man with his own gun ending the slaughter.
nothing more nothing less.
pray for those lost and much thanks to the brave american
