Misdemeanor child neglect.

7-year-old shoots 6-year-old

JACKSON, MS -- A six-year-old is recovering in the hospital after being shot by her seven-year old brother.

(snip)

Jackson Police tell us 34-year-old Kizzy McKinney of Jackson went into the bank and left her two children in the vehicle. Police say the children found a gun in the car, the seven-year-old boy pulled the trigger and shot his sister in the foot.

McKinney came out of the bank to find her daughter screaming. The child was rushed to UMC. Her condition is not considered to be life-threatening.

McKinney has been charged with misdemeanor child neglect.

No one should lose their right to keep firearms over this, accidents happen.

Child neglect involving a firearm should be a felony, resulting in loss of right to have firearms.

It was extremely lucky that she was shot in the foot and not somewhere like her head or stomach. Too many kids are being killed by guns adults leave where they can find them. That's serious negligent whether it results in death or injury.

While it does sound very appropriate to make the charge a felony, I am not sure if the parent should lose the rights to the child in all situations involving children and firearms. I don't think it should be a zero tolerance policy. Would all parents charged with felony child neglect lose custody of their children. Would seem to me that they would. Sorry I am not directly answering your question. I would need to know the penalty for felony child neglect. There are definitely situations where neglect involving a firearm should be a felony. Sometimes it should end in a loss of parental rights. Others probably not.

Are cases where a child and gun come together, and the parent/s have been found to be in neglect, always a misdemeanor?

Maybe I am being a Dingbat this morning.

Just wondering what other implications come along with a felony child neglect charge. As for the firearm alone, yes, this parent should not be able to legally own a firearm from this day forward. The government has the right to go infringe more in order to protect the weakest among us.
