(Previous posts about this topic have relied on the libertarian Carolina Journal so here's another story not from a conservative site rather Raleigh's NBC station WNCN.)
Just last week, the West Hoke Elementary School made national headlines when a kindergartner was sent to the cafeteria to eat a school meal because it was claimed her homemade lunch didn't meet nutritional guidelines.
(...)
On Jan. 31, someone at West Hoke Elementary sent 4-yr-old Jazlyn Zambrano to the cafeteria to eat school food saying her homemade lunch of salami, cheese, wheat bun and juice was no good.
According to them there was something in my lunch that didnt comply with the four requirements of one meat, one dairy, two servings of fruit or vegetable, and milk, said Diane Zambrano.
That infuriates Zambrano because she and her husband make an effort to eat healthy all the time, making sure little Jazlyn drinks only milk, water and juice and doesnt consume junk food.
We dont give her sweets or candy, said Zambrano.
(...)
In a written statement officials said school staffers have been retrained and appropriate personnel action has been taken to make sure it doesnt happen again.
(...)
The letter sent home with Jazlyn from the schools principal said the lunches had been replaced to help increase the schools rating in a program it was participating in called ECER-5.

sadly this kind of story gets blown out of proportion for those already paranoid about 'big government" (such as drinkingwithbob...please click dislike on the video as he relies on his captive, unskeptical online audience to make his version of the story seem legit)
here's a TYT video with a more sensible look at a similar lunch policy at this Chicago primary school
as if it wasn't bad enough with the wingnuts screaming about Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" program and San Francisco banning happy meal TOYS (not the food itself) meant the end of food freedom.
and my theory about hoke is that whichever gov't agency was involved probably had connections with agribusiness. i wish agribusiness was the talking point more than "big government".

(21,675 posts)but this is ridiculous. it's not the school's business what parents send to school with them for lunch. good grief.

(44,173 posts)If you brought a lunch from home that had soda or cookies or candy, the school teachers would actually take them away.

(27,310 posts)That is pretty much a crap lunch. But, I have no clue as to whether or not that the school could do better.

(37,648 posts)They say they don't give her sweets or candy, but "juice" is the same thing as a sweet, except with vitamins & antioxidants, since it's loaded with sugar and has no fiber. Better to include a real fruit like apple.
Salami - that's okay, since it's not an everyday thing. But I think salami is very high in sodium.
Wheat bun - good.
No veggie. The juice could qualify as a fruit, except it has no fiber like a piece of fruit, and it's equal to several pieces of fruit in calories & sugar, w/o fiber to counteract the sugar.
Cheese - that's okay.
No dairy, like milk. But cheese is a dairy.
But...it's ridiculous for the govt to get this involved in a child's homemade lunch unless there's something seriously wrong, like a shot of tequila included, or just a bag of jelly beans with nothing else.
I think all this lunch focus is about money.

(27,310 posts)including the bun. I'm 99.99% sure that the 2nd ingredient in that bun is some sort of sugar.

(21,675 posts)i never really realized how sweet hamburger buns were until i basically stopped eating them, and then had one. all that sugar is definitely not necessary!
