And in answer to my post below, now we know why it took the Russians three weeks to get back to the International Olympic Committee. The Russians never had any intent on promising to protect the safety of athletes and guests at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

It's outrageous that a world competition would have it's citizens threatened in this way.

(15,262 posts)If that does not happen, boycott.

(3,121 posts)These laws.
In fact I hope those countries with marriage equally start pulling out because of Russian laws

(16,860 posts)If they can't guarantee that the athletes will be safe from arrest for being who they are, it's time to look for a place that will keep everyone safe.

(19,497 posts)If the IOC can't/won't pull the games then nations of conscience need to boycott.

(13,616 posts)If Salt lake City knew to behave, Russia has no excuse. Who would have thought that the post Soviet Union Russia would just be the Czarist Russia with a few modern trappings?

(146,338 posts)no attention to the Games anyhow. But, athletes and those who attend the Games can boycott. I believe they should, at this point.

(39,961 posts)or boycott them. This is freaking ridiculous. Just saying something that is perceived as pro-gay can get you arrested? Wow. That's pretty wide open to interpretation.

(16,380 posts)then I am for a boycott. I don't see another alternative.
On a side note I saw a panelist (I don't recall on what talking head show, maybe Chris Hayes?) that actually said that if we boycott the games because of this the ramifications might be:
"Only 10 percent of people are gay and possibly the other 90 percent of the athletes would be angry at the gay athletes."
Really?

(758 posts)if foreigners are arrested for gay gestures? how will the USA (or European countries) respond if their citizens are arrested in Russia?
Might be interesting...

(16,860 posts)We don't want to risk an international incident. Tensions are pretty high between the U.S. and Russia right now as it is. It's no secret that Obama and Putin don't like each other, and a pissing match between those two could bring us back to the worst days of the Cold War. Moving or boycotting the Olympics would be more than making a statement about human rights. It would be the best thing to do in the interests of world peace as well.

(966 posts)or else all that will be there will be the Syrian bobsled team and the North Korean figure skaters . Maybe he'll have Snowden light the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony

(6,929 posts)Sure, athletes train their whole lives for the Olympics, but to get thrown in jail for who you are is beyond the pale to me.

(27,670 posts)would be better than a boycott.
Go to the starting line, but don't run the race, or engage in the competition.
They would go down in history as much more than just Olympic athletes.
