popular that Jesus.
That was what we all heard.
What we didn't hear was the rest of the interview that John gave and he was basically commenting about how irreverent it was for the Beatles to be more popular than Jesus. He was commenting that more attention was showered on a Rock band than on Jesus.
You should have seen the book burning, mostly in the South but there was one small "bonfire" that I remember here in the Cleveland area...
Here is a clip of the hysteria stoked by ministers over Lennon's comments.
Knee jerk behavior seems to be trait for some Christians, religious zealots, I guess to be fair, down through the ages.

(767 posts)In 1966 the Rutles faced the biggest threat to their careers. Nasty in a widely quoted interview had apparently claimed that the Rutles were bigger than God, and was reported to have gone on to say that God had never had a hit record.
The story spread like wildfire in America. Many fans burnt their albums, many more burnt their fingers attempting to burn their albums. Album sales sky-rocketed. People were buying them just to burn them.
But in fact it was all a ghastly mistake. Nasty, talking to a slightly deaf journalist, had claimed only that the Rutles were bigger than Rod. Rod Stewart would not be big for another eight years, and certainly at this stage hadn't had a hit. At a press conference, Nasty apologized to God, Rod and the press, and the tour went ahead as planned. It would be the Rutles' last.
