My high school days were from 1959-63. In 1959, high school dances featured both the Hokey-Pokey and Conga lines. As teenagers, we rolled our eyes at this nonsense, of course, but participated anyhow.

In 1962, though, a garage band, named The Flashmen, after our school mascot, The Flash, in which I played tenor sax, took over the high school dances, covering all of the popular music. Our music alternated with records, of course, but the adults no longer chose the music. Before that, much of the music being played dated back to the 1940s, and was chosen by some teacher or other adult.

Our little band proved to be the changing force that took the dances away from old standards to the dreaded Rock N Roll we preferred. We weren't bad, and did a pretty good job of covering most of what was popular. I also did vocals, along with our very talented lead guitarist. It was great, although the official chaperones drew the line the night we played "Louie Louie" for 15 minutes, including new lyrics written by band members. The chaperones, apparently, didn't understand the lyrics and were concerned that we might be sneaking in, you know, sexy stuff.

Our version of "Pipeline" rocked the place!

It's the meaning of life. Kids dancing off beat, and enjoying them selves. Mitch McConnell should try it. I do it. And I'm a happier person for it.

I never wanted to do it, not knowing if I would get my own (or some other kid's) body parts back at the end.
