RMoney at Ford Field: MY WIFE DRIVES ‘A COUPLE OF CADILLACS’

ROMNEY: MY WIFE DRIVES ‘A COUPLE OF CADILLACS’ | Mitt Romney’s speech this afternoon to the Detroit Economic Club at Ford Field started off poorly with an embarrassingly below-capacity crowd and only got worse when he made a couple of awkward gaffes towards the end. First, he repeated his bizarre and widely-mocked line about liking Michigan because “the trees are the right height.” Then, he played into the out-of-touch patrician narrative he’s trying to shed when he said his wife drives not one, but “a couple of Cadillacs.” Watch it:

video of the Checkers Speech and read about it in many books. At least Nixon wasn't lying about the coat, though he was lying through his teeth about the slush fund, which was a somewhat open secret even then.

I was old enough (17) to sit in the living room with my dad (a union mechanic all of his working life until he was injured) when ole' Dick resigned. My dad's comment? "Good riddance to that goddam crook!" Years later I read the famous quote of Harry Truman's:

"Richard Nixon is a no good, lying bastard. He can lie out of both sides of his mouth at the same time, and if he ever caught himself telling the truth, he'd lie just to keep his hand in."

Harry knew what was what, didn't he?

Watergate was my real political coming of age, though RFK was my hero at age 11-12.

No respectable campaign manager would look at this and say "Yeah, this will be great". Wow! Add this epic fail strategy to the list of screwups from his staff. But then, we have the candidate himself reminding us how many cars his family needs for all the mansions. Wow again!
Also add that he fired the debate coach that had better prepared him because he took a little credit.
To say that the next staff meeting will be a bit tense and awkward is an understatement.
Keep the crazy coming, Romney. It is so fun to watch.

If you have lived in different places - or even visited them, close your eyes and try - in turn - to visualize each one. Now, I do know know the average height of trees in Massachusetts, where he was Governor or NH where he vacations - or any of his other many places.

I suspect - that almost in a rosebud (Citizen Kane) way that the look and size of the trees connected with his image of his world in the early 1950s. The comment is almost impressionistic and seemed to be coming from somewhere deeper than his typical words. It is clearly not thought out as there really is no one best height.

The chances that Flip-Flopper or anybody in his family owns anything other than Benzes, Jags, etc are approximately 4 x 10 to the minus 42 power.

Of course, if his bluff is called, he can order his servants to clean the spare change out of the sofas at his homes & buy 10 or 20 CTS-Vs.

He has absolutely no idea what it is like to not be filthy, stinking rich. Every time he opens his mouth, he proves it. His handlers must the same, or too stupid to censor the man.

Mitt, having four vehicles, at least three of them high end, for two people is not generally the kind of personal fleet that poor or even middle class people have. My partner and I are driving a 1996 Taurus with 175,000 miles on it, and we are both thankful every day to even have that. We were at the mercy of a poorly set up local bus system before we had that, which meant several miles walked in bitter cold each day. I'd take the bus and say "screw the car!" if the bus system was good around here. Four cars! Two Cadillacs! How DO they ever survive, living in such meager conditions!
