Trial gets under way for Rutgers student accused of bullying (Tyler Clementi)

A former Rutgers University student went on trial Friday in New Jersey on hate crimes charges and other counts for allegedly using a webcam to spy on his roommate's sexual encounter with another man.

The roommate, Tyler Clementi, committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge just days after Dahrun Ravi allegedly streamed the encounter remotely and allowed others to view it.

Ravi, 19, faces a 15-count indictment in connection with Clementi's 2010 death that includes charges of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, tampering with physical evidence, witness tampering and hindering apprehension or prosecution.

Had it been straight sex that he was streaming, it would have been just another crude college prank. If it had not been the "last straw", had Tyler waited another few weeks or months until another incident pushed him over the edge, Ravi would not be national news. He might be an all right kid, although with very poor judgment in practical jokes. Being crude and tactless and having bad judgment are things that education is supposed to correct. Too bad that education lagged behind.

But if he gets convicted and sent to prison, he will get to spend his sentence with REAL psychopaths, sociopaths, and the violent mentally ill. That would shitcan any hope of rehabilitating him, and instead reinforce poor judgment and anti-social behavior. Maybe if he were sentenced to do a few thousand hours of community service to the gay community. I dunno.

"Had it been straight sex that he was streaming, it would have been just another crude college prank" .... Taping people having sex (then broadcasting it) without their knowledge and consent is an egregious act. An act for which one cannot predict the consequences to their victims.

This act is one that can put him in league with "REAL psychopaths, sociopaths..."

I can think of about half a dozen jerks on my floor at the dorm that would have done that to me. Thank FSM for the primitive video technology 40 years ago.

recording (and broadcasting) people engaged in sex without the knowledge and consent of BOTH of the participants is a very serious act. An act that can have serious and far reaching consequences for the victims.

There have always been Peeping Toms. It's only now that the technology exists both to surreptitiously record and immediately disseminate and archive it permanently for posterity. Technology has raised the stakes of the consequences, but it hasn't changed the fact that miscreants like this have always been around.

What's more, the incident happened barely two weeks into the school year and Ravi had already been "sexpelled" from his room more than once over a very short period of time. Suddenly faced with an unfamiliar shared-living situation with someone whose sex life (whatever it may involve) is active and taking place in *your* room is extremely unsettlling for many new college students. Ravi's actions were in poor taste, but not surprising -given the sex-and-pranks dormitory culture which you'll find on every US campus.

Most college freshmen have little or no experience in conflict resolution, and are expected to be "cool" about the sexcapades going on around (or right in front of) them. Everybody came out a loser in this tragedy. Colleges and universities usually turn a blind eye to the sexual activity in their dorms, and complaining about it (especially to a student RA) may only result in the complainant being labeled some kind of 'misfit'.

Hopefully, the folks at Rutgers -and maybe some other schools- will examine the dorm culture that contributed to this.

Sex tapes (taken without the knowledge and consent of BOTH participants) is far more than a little college prank.

Do you have any idea of what the consequences can be to the victims? Do you care?

if one is seriously uncomfortable about it he would talk to his roommate or even someone else about it.

but based on what Ravi was saying he thought it was just funny that his roommate is making out with another dude and it would be funny to show the world .

The ones who are testifying do not seem to be concerned that a classmate DIED. They seem to have no respect for the court or the process. One young woman seemed flippant about the whole thing, answering, "Yep" and kind of smirking about many of the questions . I just wanted to reach through the screen and scream at her, "A young man DIED - don't you care?" but it was obvious that she did not care.

Psychopathic.
