General Discussion

1) go after people who have a bulhorn to let the masses know what their government is doing.
2) threaten them personally with criminal prosecutions
3) threaten their family members with criminal prosecution
4) If that doesn't work, follow through on those prosecutions with every power available left to abuse the process
5) Once a conviction is successful, you have frightened others, who have a bullhorn, into not reporting.
6) Things go underground, associations are investigated
7) Authorities start becoming paranoid and see individuals as enemies of the state
8) Round up people who have voiced concerns or have organized
9) make everyone to fearful to question anything their govt has done
This is the path we are now on. Only one way to stop it. Support those with the bullhorn, now.

I've always been critical, but truly the curtain has been pulled all the way back. I'm astonished at what I'm seeing.

(38,893 posts)and that it's directly in the path of our country. The problem is, the surveillance state can flip into being a police state in an instant. This is how it begins. And it'd all be for our "protection".
When has an amassing of this amount of power -not- been eventually been terribly abused?

"You can see where the real center of power is in this country," he said. "There are several thousand people here right outside the Capitol, and only like 50 cops. But when we get a few people down on Wall Street, the police response is crazy."

(36,223 posts)I have always understood the potential abuses. I have seen some. But this here is like a big red sign screaming danger!
To know for a fact, the type of power they have given themselves, which they have revealed in this instance, is a real eye opener. Tends to bring one out of the abstract and into reality.

#3. If family members are involved with stolen classified govt. documents they may be subject to detention.
#4. Makes no sense
you must be making this list up
#5. If someone is an actual whistleblower, then there are laws to protect them from conviction. Members of the military are subject to military law.
#6. Those involved in stealing and releasing classified govt documents STARTED underground. LOL!
#7. Libertarians already hate Authority and some are working to bring down the Left in the USA- See Greenwald, Assange, Ron Paul
#8. Criminals are subject to detention
#9. At what point are you going to start questioning the half truths and distortion Greenwald has been peddling?

(36,223 posts)2) Greenwald is a journalist, his partner was on a trip paid by a news paper, he stole nothing, he was given classified documents that were leaked. We don't criminalize journalists for being in possession of leaked documents, unless he stole them himself.
3) see #2
4)makes perfect sense.
5) We are talking about a journalist!!!!!!
6) Are you OK?
7) you are the person who thinks it's criminal "to bring down a political party". If that was the case, start the file on me.
8) Greenwald is a JOURNALIST, that was provided leaked documents, stay on point here, or at least try to.
9) Ask yourself some self reflecting questions, and exactly what is it you stand for. Cause to me, it appears you think journalists ought to be treated as criminals and terrorists.

(10,007 posts)yet you then come and post Authoritarian arguments.
In every one of your points, the Government is held to be the injured party and the people revealing wrongdoing are held to be criminals - simply because they violated the wall of secrecy between the Government and the People.
The People are the victims here.
