Israeli attack on Iran could pull US into new war

That could mean pressing into service the top tier of American firepower -- warplanes, warships, special operations forces and possibly airborne infantry -- with unpredictable outcomes in one of the world's most volatile regions.

"Israel can commence a war with Iran, but it may well take U.S. involvement to conclude it," says Karim Sadjadpour, a Middle East specialist at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

An armed clash with Iran is far from certain. Diplomacy backed by increasingly tough economic penalties is still seen by the United States and much of the rest of the world as worth pursuing for now, not least because the other options -- going to war or simply doing nothing -- are considered more risky.

Much more at the link! A very interesting read. And from Fox, mouthpiece of the Military Industrial Complex. As crazy as it may seem, even the warheads over at Fox are starting to realize while war means money, World War III doesn't.

The article touches on two likely scenarios which would almost certainly "force" US involvement: If an Israeli pilot were shot down and needed to be rescued or (and this is the more compelling of the two) if the US detected that Iran was preparing to launch a ballistic missile in retaliation after being struck.

Nomatter what, though, President Obama would be between a rock and a hard place on an epic scale, politically. A phantasmagorical situation where a tiny country of less than 10 million, led by an arch NeoCon government could potentially force the hand of a nation of 300 million, led by a Democratic President into a new Great War.

Even America's Buck Turgidsons look like they might have started having second thoughts.

...Iran can not retaliate against Israel without pulling us in.

Iran would literally have to just sit there while being attacked and take it. Not retaliate.

For the first time they attack Israel on their land, the U.S. would respond.

At least that's the way I currently feel things would play out.

it would be walking into a hamburger grinder.

I think the old maxim holds true, that you can't win a war from the air. You need boots--or at least tank treads--on the ground.

But more, that any reluctance shown on the part of the US only strengthens Republican challengers...who Netanyahu would much rather be the next president than the current, Democratic, one.

How fucked is that?
