Must say I've never spotted similar circumstances in the UK and if I did I'd step in soon as you could blink with the speech which starts "Hold up a minute.............".

If people are going to be grouped for any reason whatsoever then best avoid strawberry blondes with freckles.

and she explains it perfectly.

She's pissed, as she should be, but she knows how it works.

ingrained in everything we do that to one group of people it is so subtle, and to another it's like fireworks going off, time and time again.

And as long as we don't fix this it works to the advantage of those few who are the enemies of most of us.

against racism, sexism and homophobia and transphobia. Privilege comes with responsibility, or society breaks down.

It takes bravery, good timing, wisdom and courage to do this effectively. This wise woman is right--if done with malice or in a rage it would have not come off as a growing experience.

Bigotry comes from a primitive arrested developed part of people, so they have to be carefully taught. If you shift yourself, you can really see these people as acting out like children having a temper tantrum!

"You are weird so I hate you!"
"You are acting different, I'm scared and don't know what to do!"
"The way you look scares me!"
"I was mistreated by someone who looks just like you and I vowed this would not happen again!"

AND it doesn't help that multimedia has been used to profile and feed this bigotry.

But I think it may help to see people as scared children, in order to shift into a compassion. And it takes good instinct, like this woman obviously has, to know when and when not to choose this battle.... what a wonderful wise maternal vibe she has. So inspiring.

While traveling in the Middle East it was interesting to be the only one from America in many places. I had to get used to the 'long look'. It was a language in itself. It often started with a look of shock (I was there during Bush), then we just relaxed in each others' gaze....and...after a few moments a smile or nod or a peaceful look away would end the 'conversation'.

I became a lot more aware of my facial expression, and others who carry a lot of unconscious tension and fear in their face, that they are unable to turn off when meeting a stranger. SO much is communicated non verbally, and the solution is not to wear a fake mask of a smile but to become more aware of body language when in another culture. And I came to realize that subtle prejudice is communicated non verbally before anything is ever said.. I really grew from my travels out of the US.

BEAUTIFUL video!!!! Thanks Skidmore!

Peace~~Felix

DAMMIT - can't we get over this? Ever??????

Just still so discouraging, that this woman should have to put up with such sneaky-ass covering-up-for-plain-'ol-racism crap.

When do we grow up as a nation and get beyond this stupid shit? Why the fuck don't they just be honest about it and burn a cross in front of the store? Or have their checkers wear sheets and hoods? "That's our policy..."

Now they just go "under the radar" to perpetuate this shit.
