50 years later, they stand together. Maybe this weekend, they march together:

(9,126 posts)For me, Trayvon's mother is such a role model of strength and grace and courage. And after all their unimaginable suffering and that mockery of a trial, there is Trayvon's family standing with the family of Emmett Till. Words cannot express how moving this photo is, and I hope somewhere in the world there is solace and justice for every one.

(1,850 posts)Just one question: Why do you refer to "that mockery of a trial?" Seems to me that the trial was very fair. The prosecution may have sucked, but the trial itself was aboveboard.

(9,126 posts)And the prosecution was awful. So though I may have inferred I thought it was the trial itself that was the issue, I do believe that Zimmerman should be behind bars and the fact that he isn't indicates something wrong with our justice system.

(1,850 posts)But the prosecution left much to be desired. They were never able to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. Their witnesses seemed to mostly support Z's version of events.
I like the idea that a defendant is innocent until proven guilty. The burden should be on the prosecution. If they can't do the job they were hired to do, the defendant walks, guilty or not. If we convicted people based on public opinion polls, THAT would make a mockery of the whole concept of justice.

(28,979 posts)I recall the elderly uncle of Emmett spoke out against the murder. So this is the cousin that Emmett was with? Emmett Till's story still strikes an emotional chord even these many years later.
There was a great "Eyes on the Prize" episode on Till:
Also Gewendolyn Brooks wrote an amazing poem : "A Bronzeville Mother Loiters in Mississippi. Meanwhile, a Mississippi Mother burns bacon" http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/a-bronzeville-mother-loiters-in-mississippi-mean/

(31,828 posts)The Till murder was a shaking thing for my dad, his brothers, cousins - their parents. It was what drove their parents to putting them on a path of getting out of the country - or at minimum the South as quickly as they could. Children had become fair game for these monsters.
