Bert Fish Medical Center: Smokers need not apply

Starting Jan. 1, Bert Fish Medical Center will no longer hire tobacco users, joining two other local hospitals in telling smokers not to apply.

Applicants will be tested for a nicotine byproduct and sign an agreement to remain tobacco-free during their employment with the New Smyrna Beach public hospital. The prohibition doesn’t apply to volunteers, medical staff or Bert Fish’s roughly 700 employees who were hired before the implementation date.

“We are in the health care business, and we should be a role model,” said Nancy Evolga, executive director of human resources for the 112-bed hospital. “There is 50 years of data that says tobacco use is bad.”

The hospital’s decision is its latest move in a series of steps to restrict smoking. In 2009, Bert Fish declared itself a smoke-free campus and banned lighting up on the property.

1. Some might call this discriminatory. I say it's a smart move.

People who ingest hot smoky gas into their lungs are harming themselves and everyone near them.

Tobacco is legal as is alcohol birth control and eating meat among many other "personal preferences" that are again legal in all 50 states. I consider this an invasion of privacy demanding regulation of ones lifestyle to fit a Private for profit ckrporations statistical analysys on how to optimize their control and financial efficieny of a corporate commody namely their labor force....

While the conservative courts have been turning a blind eye to "personal human rights" over the rights of corporations...this does not make it right or morally correct.

If they made it volentary and offered incentives for living a healthier liffestyle i would have no problem probably complying..but as is..i would find another job and tell them to go fuck themselves.

Drew.

apartment building is an example of this. No smoking in your apartment by February 2014. Ridiculous, but as many said they hopefully won't raise the rent with the "savings" on their insurance premiums.

I too am torn.
Back when indoor smoking in public places took effect, it was pretty clear that was the beginning of slippery slope.
Banning a legal substance from the work place makes sense..
but in one's private time???

Statistics say only about 21% of the population smokes, so don't look to public outrage on this issue.

FWIW...nicotine free for the last 15 years.
most people who quit find the odor of a smoker very offensive, even if the smoker does not light up during the workday.

11. Apparently it's okay for their medical staff to ingest that gas.

5. Notice the article uses the terms "smoke" and "tobacco use" interchangeably.

They are not the same, obviously.
and this does not address the issue of e-cig users, who will test postive for nicotine but who are tobacco and smoke free.
I see a court case in the future.

It's not just users of e-cigs that will be affected, but also other nonsmokers, like the people who use nicotine gum or patches.
