but the farmed salmon are actually killing the wild, so that is a major issue. They pen them at the mouths of rivers and they contaminate wild strains in a variety of ways.

80 percent of the world's salmon supply comes from farms in Chile and Norway.

Alaska provides the vast majority of wild Atlantic salmon and through state legislation have assured sustainability for the most part.

33. Lots of problems worldwide

Chile's industry came close to collapse due to some form of anemia. Massive doses of antibiotics needed to keep overcrowded fish alive. Pens are destructive to environmentally sensitive areas. When farmed fish escape captivity, they can push out native stocks from spawning beds spreading disease, the waste destructive to habitat.

I think fish hatcheries are a different story. They help restore native runs.

One of the biggest concerns is the amount of food required to raise farmed salmon. It generally takes three pounds of wild fish to grow one pound of farmed salmon. The environmental impact of salmon farming is still increasing as global production continues to rise.

Most salmon are farmed in open pens and cages in coastal waters. Waste from these farms is released directly into the ocean. Parasites and diseases from farmed salmon can spread to wild fish swimming near the farms and escaping farmed salmon can harm wild populations. As a result, all salmon farmed in ocean net pens get an "Avoid" ranking.

However, some salmon farmers are making changes to improve their practices. So far, one change has proven successful—raising U.S. freshwater coho using inland tank-based, closed systems. Closed systems reduce environmental risks by containing pollution, disease, parasites and reducing fish escapes and result in a "Best Choice" ranking.

Look for wild-caught salmon or clearly labeled U.S.-farmed freshwater coho salmon. For now, "Avoid" farmed Atlantic salmon.

that aside from the farm salmon the whole lot are banned in the UK - there may be exceptions fpr UK farms.

The US will of course expect the EU to change some of its laws with respect to foods and the discussed US/EU trade agreenent. The US can also expect to be told to fuck off.

In Mpls.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Minnesota health officials are investigating after dozens of people fell sick at an Ecuadorian festival in Minneapolis earlier this month.

At least 81 people have been hospitalized for severe gastrointestinal symptoms after eating guinea pig meat served by one of the festival’s vendors.

The Minnesota Department of Health said many of those people tested positive for salmonella poisoning.

Officials have not identified the vendor.

As for salmon, the kind served in sushi restaurants here most likely are shipped from Japan. (I supposed they could be radio active, but I rather doubt it.)

In fact, this is an industry the government is trying to promote. According to Wikipedia, New Zealand produces almost half of the world's supply of farmed King Salmon. Possibly some specific techniques or drugs are banned, but not the salmon itself.
