You know what I don't get?

Marilyn Manson routinely tears pages out of the Bible whenever he performs a concert, which means he goes through a lot of Bibles when he's on tour, but nobody other than Fred Phelps or possibly Rick Santorum wants to see Manson's head adorning the top of the Washington Monument. It's a Bible. Although Christians recognize the text as sacred, they also realize that more Bibles are printed every single day in almost every language known to the civilized world. Even Klingon.

But try burning a few copies of the Quran that have been demonstrated beyond question to pass secret messages between Taliban prisoners at Bagram AFB in Afghanistan, and all of a sudden, Army officers are being assassinated, our chain of command is apologizing up and down the line as though they accidentally buzzed Mecca with a Predator, and now some people are calling for the White House to be razed as atonement.

The same principle applies. It's a Quran. They print more every single day. The Quran isn't going away just because we denied some Taliban prisoners the ability to send clandestine messages to each other while in our custody.

Peace be upon us all.

1. Perhap if we weren't occupying their country it wouldn't have come up?

I find the outrage over burning Korans or Bibles or American flags stupid. They are objects, not some divine lightbeam. But i also find the outrage over their outrage somewhat ingenuous when we are the occupiers, the invaders, the usurpers. We've installed apuppet government over them. If it wasn't Korans, it would be innocent people killed in drone attacks. These people are already angry and fighting for their country as they have for centuries and they have a track record that shows they will eventually come out on top. I think we are pursuing a hopeless policy, though I am not even sure what the objective is to tell the truth.

3. I'm tempted to say our mission ended with the death of bin Laden

But I also remember how the Taliban destroyed those irreplaceable Buddha statues. If allowed to spread, how much more will they vandalize? How many more women will they rape and terrorize?

I want to get out of Afghanistan, too, but the missteps made by the Bush administration in neutralizing the Taliban has got me divided against myself on the issue sometimes.

4. The President's apology was to protect the safety of U.S. troops

It couldn't completely defuse the tensions, but it--combined with acceptance of the apology by the Afghan government--had a calming influence. It was the right thing to do.

Or was the representative of an occupying military force. Wouldn't that make a drastic difference in how americans reacted?

I get it... comparing Marilyn Manson tearing pages out of the Bible to our troops burning the Quran is comparing apples to oranges...

There was a time when desecrating a Bible would get you killed -- like before The Enlightenment. While the West has had a few hundred years to tone down the punishments for Bible abuse, there has been no similar enlightenment in the Islamic world. Allow Prof. Tyson to explain it:

8. Wasn't somebody in this country recently killed because he wore the wrong baseball cap to a game?

Don't some Christians pray to statues to for cures? Or, kneel before imagined images on freeway underpasses? Not to mention burning "heretics" and witches alive in the good old days of Christianity?

Actually, I think the reaction is more likely in response to a foreign power invading and occupying their country. This is just another indication of how "picking up the white man's burden" is a losing proposition.
